how long can you store kits?
I've wondered about that, whether it would be feasible to buy a kit on sale and hold it until I could talk a cousin into giving a sample. Are there any guidelines on how long an unused kit is viable once you receive it from FTDNA?

Gramps for Linux
I'm an absolute novice at genealogy, so take my recommendation for what it's worth.
I use Gramps. It works well in Linux, at least for the things I've tried to do so far. I understand it also works in Windows. It is written in the python scripting language...

Oops, I posted too soon. In the last hour or so the haplogroup assignment on my personal page has changed from H* to H2a2. Looks like you were right, Ann....

I don't think you can draw too much about your haplogroup from your matches in Mitosearch. My mitotype is this close to CRS and probably H2a2, though FTDNA still classifies me as H*, but in Mitosearch all my closest matches are U5. I puzzled over that for a while too....

FWIW my Dad and I didn't get asterisks when we tested negative for all those down stream markers either. We got Dad's deep clade results near the end of June and mine in the latter half of August. I wondered then what if anything had changed....

Maybe DNA testing is catching on and more and more people are getting tested? Maybe we'll soon have many more matches in the databases to ponder over? Hey, a guy can dream can't he?...
