Robert,
Thanks for your thoughts on this. I will bear them in mind when I get back to the project.

Hi,
I can't help with your basic question but I can say something about the origins of the Scots. The Scots were an Irish tribe who dominated the North of Ireland in the early centuries AD. Around the fourth century they started to move over to the west of Scotland and established a kingdom...

Data from non-members of Groups
I am thinking of setting up a haplogroup project and am curious to know how Project Group Administrators deal with the issue of useful available data which lies outside that contributed by members of the various Project Groups. I have in mind the haplotypes submitted to Ysearch by people who are not...

@ eastara,
I come from the Teesside area of NE England as does my earliest paternal ancestor, born late 1600s. Our location surname originates not far away in North Yorkshire or Cumbria.

Deep clade tests
Hi,
On ftdna's suggestion I ordered Deep Clade tests for L38 and P218. L38 has tested negative. I queried the delay on P218 and have just heard from Darren that the lab says "this Primer does not work so this SNP is no longer offered"....

Thanks for comments. I'll try to be patient and wait for FTDNA'S opinion.

Further question
I have been assigned to Haplogroup I2 and have been tested negative at P214, P216, and P217. I am waiting result for P218. If this is positive am I right in thinking that I would be allocated to an undefined sub-clade of I2b? I find the sequence of negatives followed...

Batch 301 anyone?
I am still awaiting a Deep Clade Test, from Batch 301, which was due on 05/06. It is one of two such tests that I ordered and I have had the result from the other one. The result that I have had wasn't advised by email but it disappeared from the "Pending" section and is now shown on my haplotree....

As a non-American I find your question baffling and a bit troubling. My view is quite simply that you are who you think you are. Your family background is African-American so that is your cultural identity. No one else can tell you that you are something other than that. Your DNA results tell you about...

I just signed up to the Genographic Project yesterday and I also wasn't asked to pay. To-day when I tried to look at the Genographic site I got a scary message from my browser saying the security certificate didn't match up and someone may be trying to access my computer!
I think I will...

Very interesting that SMGF and FTDNA gave the same results.
I am sure that dna figures are more reliable than many of those obtained from the paper trail. I have come across errors in a marriage certificate, census returns, legal documents and the LDS.

Just to clarify one or two things: I did mean accuracy (though precision might be a better term), I am not questioning ftdna's results and I am not thinking of moving to another company.
I am simply aware that figures produced by laboratories in other spheres of activity have a degree...

Accuracy of DYS figures
After reading a number of threads and seeing the importance attached to the DYS values I was lead to wonder if FTDNA, or anyone else, has quoted the accuracy that can be expected of these figures. For example if the number of alleles quoted for a given locus is, say, 25 then what is the chance that...

Some really helpful posts, thanks. I do feel that I have a better understanding of the whole subject now (how often can you say that about internet forums?)
I like cacio's reminder that the SNPs that have been chosen to trace the movement and whereabouts of people are just a few of many...
