Culture versus ethnicity

I may be wrong on this but I thought that being a Jew was a culture and/or a religion and sometimes people marry into families that religion is different to theirs so it wouldn't always show up in their DNA except as surnames that are well known as Jews.

Why would four or five names turn up on a page of family finder at the bottom and then turn up again on the next page with a few new names then a couple of pages on a whole page be a repeat of a previous one with a couple of new names. Still puzzled

Thinking of DNA as a Victorian sponge is an upgrade a larger slice of the same cake, a slice from a different part of the cake or a cake with a bigger circumference so the information goes further back?
