Thank you all for your input about going straight for the Big Y 700 and strategies for getting the best price. I appreciate it!

Thank you to everyone who posted - I really appreciate it! I, too, thought there was a time one had to order an STR test first, so it's great to have confirmation that's no longer the case. And also confirmation that the Y-111 test/results/matches will be available with the Big Y 700. Thank you!

Glad to hear you were able to get information through another source and have a Y DNA test in the works. And it sounds like you're making progress in your search. Wishing you good luck!

Thank you so much for breaking this all down! It's confusing, but you did a really good job of highlighting what seems to be the same about these terms and what might be different. I'll look forward to reading the blog by Roberta Estes that you mention. I really appreciate your help!

Private variant vs novel variant vs singleton
Hi! I would like to understand what Y DNA private variants are versus novel variants versus singletons - are they the same? Are they different? I would also like to understand how the term terminal SNP fits in, too. Is there a good resource anyone can suggest for educating myself on this terminology....

Thank you for your response! Just to confirm, I could order a Big Y 700 test only, but still see matches I have who have only done, say, a Y-37 test?

Thank you for your response! Sounds like you were able to order the Big Y without ordering an STR test first.
I believe you are correct - 700 is the number of STRs tested. That brings me to another question. Are you able to see your matches to people who have not done Big Y testing?...

STR test before Big Y?
Hi! Does one need to do one of the STR tests - Y-37, Y-111 - before ordering a Big Y test? Or can one order a Big Y test with an STR test?

Hi! It doesn't look like anyone has replied to you yet, so I'll respond. Yes - Y DNA testing may be useful - depending on who else in your direct paternal lines has also done Y DNA testing. You might want to start with the Y-37 test. You are correct - if you get good matches, it may help direct...

Amazing # of kits overlapping on chromo 2
Hi, all!
While researching a dna match on gedmatch.com, I looked at the kits that match both of the 2 kits in question, then I looked at most of those kits through the chromo browser. I ended up with a large number of kits overlapping on chromo 2 - more than I've encountered before,...

Interpreting specific chromosome matches
Hi, all!
I've looked at the chromosomal matches for 6 people who are thought to be matches on a specific family line to try to determine who the g-g-grandfather is for my mother, Betty.
Would anyone be willing to look at my attached 2 page pdf that shows the chromosomal...

Match on maternal line that isn't match to mother? Possible?
Thanks for your replies!
FTDNA estimates the relationship as 3rd - 5th cousin, and gedmatch.com as I recall gave it a generational distance of something like 4.7, so I feel that determining the MRCA is potentially...

Which side of the family?
Hi, all!
I have an autosomal match, estimated as a 3rd - 5th cousin, who has a line in his family tree that matches with my maternal line. But this match is not a match to my mother. This match has a small, but genealogically insignificant, match with my brother - does not show up in...

Hi!
No - he had absolutely no idea that his mother had a different father! And without being presented with some kind of compelling evidence that it might be the case, I don't think he would have ever considered it a possibilityBut thankfully he did give it consideration based on...
