Cousins with different y-haplogroups
I have a 2nd cousin whose y-haplogroup is R-L51. We both have a 4th cousin whose y-haplogroup is R-P312. We all share the same 3rd great-grandfather (this is on my mother's side, so my y-haplogroup is irrelevant). Shouldn't my 2nd cousin & 4th cousin have the exact same haplogroup? Does this...

I think it's worth mentioning that NW European DNA is extremely similar; it's difficult to distinguish one ethnic group from another in atDNA testing (haplogroup markers are more capable of calling distinctions). All of Western Europe is mixed Celtic & Germanic to varying degrees. For this reason,...

My son & I uploaded out results to Gencove; I also liked it. They have a Northern British population (I show 10%) which is interesting because my mother's maiden name was Kirk, and my son & I show a small amount of Ashkenazi (which is a strong component of our oral family history).

Are SNP Packs tested in batches separate from FF or Y-DNA tests?

A good way to check these low confidence results is with GEDmatch. If a small amount of something shows up repeatedly using the different tools, a good bet is that it is real. Chromosome painting is very helpful in this regard also. As for determining how many generations back an admixture occurred?...

It is my understanding that E-L117 is more Middle Eastern/East African in origin, rather than Subsaharan African. E-L117 is found around the Mediterranean, Balkans, among Jewish populations, etc.
By the way, I have male cousins who carry the y-haplogroup E-P277, which is Subsaharan African...

My ancestry is pretty evenly mixed German (Rhineland-Pfalz, Hesse, Wurttemberg) and English. I show little Iberian in my DNA, but consistently show Indo-Iranian in small amounts. My wife is overwhelming English, with a little German-Speaking Swiss. She shows a significant amount of Iberian in her...

Is the 2% identified as a "Trace" region? If so, I think they just tally the amount that's at a higher confidence and ignore the Trace regions. I show 96% European, with <2% West Middle East and <2% Eastern European. If I add that all together it's roughly 100%. My son shows 97%...

Many Saxons settled in the Balkans, though I think they were more centrally located in Transylvania. Anyhow, Saxons in Germany & Saxon in England are basically the same genetically. Perhaps you could be descended from a Saxon settler to Southeast Europe?

I often read Switzerland described as "Central Europe". Is this accurate? Seems more Western European to me.

We are all R-Z253 (no one has tested further downline). They are all descended from the same Irishman who came to Pennsylvania in the 18th century. I am, supposedly, descended from a German who came to Pennsylvania in the 18th century....

I have 3 & 4 steps at 37 markers that have remained at 3 & 4 steps at 67 markers, however, the TiP is closer (12 generations at 90% with 37 markers, 12 generations at 97% with 67 markers). I've not yet upgraded to 111 markers. These men all have the same surname which is different from my...

Yes, I noticed the change just a few days ago. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks, everyone!...
