As Michelstaedter said, FTDNA don't handle overlapping clusters very well, they tend to erroneously allocate you to certain ethnic groups.
It's best to be cautious with FTDNA, I ran mine through Gedmatch, I have that as a comparison and I find it more accurate.
It would be...

I wouldn't read too much into it, according to My Origins I have 6% but I don't have Jewish ancestry.
If you look at the Ashkenazi cluster it overlaps Italians and Greeks, from what I've read Ashkenazi have an Eastern Mediterranean element in their ancestry.
Personally,...

I notice that in this PCA Graph the Ashkenazi overlap with Greeks and Italians so maybe that's the answer.
Perhaps FTDNA is flagging Italian or Greek from the Romans as Ashkenazi....

I have one Polish surnamed person who has 3% but they have Irish mixed in, five other British with 1-4% Ashkenazi and a person with a high 12%. All are the usual British and Irish surnames, the person with 12% has a surname of Yactor (I can't find anything on that).
My family are all...

Ashkenazi Percentages
What is everyone's thoughts on those that have no documented Jewish ancestry but have low Ashkenazi percentages?
For instance I have 4%.
Obviously the Ashkenazi cluster is centred around Eastern Europe and is a blend of European and Jewish, so I suppose it could be picking...

I wouldn't read too much into the Ashkenazi result, I get 4% and my family has lived in rural East Anglia for generations (within 10 square miles, back to the 16th century).
From what I gather Ashkenazi is a blend of European and Jewish ancestry, so if you don't have Jewish ancestry it...

Western Europe, the Danish have a genetic affinity with Germans.
During testing in the UK they tried to differentiate between Danish Vikings and Anglo-Saxons but couldn't because they are too similar.

Ashkenazi Jewish or East Mediterranean?
Hmm, I think FTDNA is confusing Ashkenazi Jewish with East Mediterranean. Ashkenazi Jewish have an East Mediterranean element. I think the East Med came over with the Romans or it could be more archaic than that.

Ashkenazi Jewish
My family are from East Anglia and I have traced them back to the 16th Century. All local country folk and English Christian.
I don't have any problem with having Ashkenazi Jewish or any other Jewish Diaspora ancestry, it would be quite cool but I cannot...Last edited by EastAnglian; 9 April 2017, 05:16 AM.

Intriguing post, I think there is a lot of conjecture when it comes to ancient Ireland and until we have some ancient DNA we will never know. It would be interesting to find out if the ancient Irish had haplogroups other than L21 and its subclades.

Hey Sonya,
I hope you find your father and you build a good relationship with him.
Your mother doesn't want anything to do with you but that doesn't prevent you from researching her family tree and gathering surnames. You can then eliminate these from your Family Finder...
