How are Shared Novel Variants calculated?
Seems like an obvious answer, but the numbers don't add up. For example, one match says 10 shared variants (of my 11). When I invoke the popup, I see 5 shared variants, 6 in mine that are not in his, and 7 in his that are not in mine. How does this add up to 10?

Ashkenazi match turned off?
In the last couple of weeks, all of my Ashkenazi kits have received a handful of "close" matches, in the 130-140cM total range, but with the largest segment in the 8-13cM range. This doesn't seem like they should be showing up as a close Ashkenazi match.
I know there is (was?)...

Common DNA (or, who matches with First?)
Attached is a triangulated cousin image, using segments of 3cM and larger.
The RED is my father to his first cousin
The YELLOW is my father to a second cousin; the grandmother in the common pair with the first cousin was the sister of the grandfather of the second cousin....

Programming against FTDNA FF Results?
Hello all,
I now curate eight family tests; all in FF, some in YDNA or mtDNA. I've been regularly downloading FF results into various sheets of an Excel spreadsheet, where I can perform all sorts of slice-and-dice operations to try and tease out which set of relatives seems to be close...

Why doesn't "known" plus "non-matching known" snps add up?
There's probably a very simple answer for this but...
My BigY Known SNPs number in excess of 36000, and my matches share about 25000-27000 of them, with 0-4 Non-Matching, Known SNPs. That doesn't add up to 36000+, nor do any two matches add up to the same value.
How does...

The red segment between my father and 1st cousin is 9.52cM/2300. This is very possibly a break off the match segment to the immediate right, which by itself is 20.05cM/5300.
The yellow segment (1st cousin and 3rd person) is 8.24cM/2200.
The blue segment (dad and 3rd person)...

You have the question right.
Consider, for example, the match on Chr.7 around the 10000000 mark. There's a large(ish) red segment between my father and his cousin, which most likely came from their mutual grandparents. There's a slightly-offset yellow segment of about the same size...

I don't understand this FF crossmatch....
Hello all, your wisdom would be appreciated. Please have a look at the attached image....
The RED is the match between my father and his first cousin, which completed today (yay for that).
YELLOW is the first cousin to a third person, and BLUE is my father to that same...

My Y67 test, pushed back to 11 March, came in yesterday anyway. Needn't have frightened me at all, apparently.
Sadly, my gg-grandfather's YDNA appears to have been a pretty rare haplogroup (T-P77), and there's no matches at all beyond Y37, and only three at Y25. But, that's my problem,...

My latest Y tests (due 22 Jan for 1-12, and 5 Feb for the rest) just got moved to as late as 11 March.
Back to waiting....

Yep, looks like an across-the-board problem here.Last edited by sjadelson; 7 January 2015, 07:54 PM.

Customer service has been very good about fixing the problem, but it clearly is not supposed to happen. When you set the Ship To address different from the Mail To, there's clearly a section called "Ship To" which gets filled in... and then ignored. It's supposed to work, but it doesn't...
