I have just 2 MtDNA matches after almost a year. Although the Haplogroup, H, is common, the haplotype is supposed to be pretty rare. And I know my mother is from a pretty under represented population (Slovenian.)
My mother was tested with another company, where they did a more complete...

Populations "on the brink" (almost 5, need more!)
Just read that the Dodecad Project is actively looking for submissions from underepresented populations that are "on the brink" of having enough for more detailed analysis.
Detailed list from his...Last edited by bkilpatrick; 7 June 2011, 10:35 AM.

Thanks, Javelin! This really helps me understand Dr. McDonald's take on my findings. I'd been wondering why he thought the tiny (.3%) Native American he picked up had more chance of being "real" than the larger (4.6) ME reported by FTDNA.
My Scottish/Slovenian mix does average...

Very helpful to read this. I had a similar question myself. Got my mother tested, in an attempt to get a better understanding of the small NA and/or ME I have.
My hunch (hope) was that this came from her side of the family. Dr. McDonald said that if that was the case, her % might...

How much good does it do to test just one parent? (I'm awaiting my mother's results from 23andMe. My father is no longer living.)
Blair...

I'm relieved to read that I am not the only one who is several generations out from an adoption or non-paternal event and still feels a need to know the truth. These secrets can have ripple effects in a family.
An update on my Minnesota search: I did eventually connect by phone with...

I had also had a switch with Illumina Population Finder at around the same time. My initial results when I first tested were 100 % European, with Orcadian as a single population match. Then, about a month ago, I got the revised results in my signature: predominantly Western European/Orcadian, plus...Last edited by bkilpatrick; 22 May 2011, 11:36 AM.

I e-mailed and heard back. Sounds like there may be opportunities for people of mixed heritage (like me) later on, but not now.
He is willing to look at my mother's results, though, when they come back from 23andme, since her ancestry is completely Slovenian.

That's encouraging!
My mother recently tested through 23andMe (because it was during their recent sale, and therefore much less expensive.) Our purpose is to get a clearer picture of that small bit of non-Western Euro (NA and/or ME) that shows up in my Family Finder results, which I...Last edited by bkilpatrick; 20 May 2011, 08:51 AM.

Re: family secrets: It wasn't my initial goal, since I didn't know there might be any, until I got these hard-to-explain NA and/or ME results. But now that has become a real motivation to pursue matches. I really pay attention when I occasionally have a match who has some possible non- W. Euro ...

With this latest group of matches (5 in last week) I have heard back from all of them, fast and friendly responses.
Initially, it seemed slower and with more non-responders. Though when I actually went back and checked, my percentage of responders had been higher than I realized, probably...Last edited by bkilpatrick; 19 May 2011, 08:54 AM.

Any else get a bunch of new matches yesterday?
4 new Family Finder matches suddenly showed up yesterday. (By my standards, that's "a bunch"!)
They never show up when filtered by "new since last log-in," though. So be sure to look at your match total...

Ancestry
Count me as another fan of Ancestry.com, including the shaking leaves!
It actually solved a family mystery when, against my better judgement, I added to my tree a very obscure detail I'd discovered in my research: the maiden name of the mother-in-law of my mother's...

Didn't get any e-mails, but when I just checked in I discovered a new match, # 29.
My usual, a 5th to distant cousin. But with a twist.
Based on her e-mail address, she works at a CA university that's about 20 miles from where I live! Now that's a first!
Probably...
