  • Aboriginal Australian ancestry

    Hello,

Just wondering if there is a reference population used to predict Australian Aboriginal in My Origins?
I know from my genealogy I am either 1.5% or 3% Aboriginal (I had my Dad take a mtDNA test which came out as haplogroup M42a to prove it conclusively).
I am still waiting for my family finder results but wondering if it will detect it or will it come out as unidentifiable? Assuming that I inherited any aboriginal DNA of course.

    Thanks

Not positive, but I'm sure they took "Oceania" out of the recent population group for MyOrigins, as opposed to the old Population Finder.
It might show up as an "Asian" group... Not very helpful at all.

There is a Australian Tribes project at FTDNA
if you are interested in that, for yDNA and mtDNA.

Once you have uploaded your results, consider uploading them to gedmatch.com as well and run admixture analyses.

I would be curious to know what results you get, if you don't mind sharing them.

If I'm not mistaken, aboriginies would fall under Oceania, however with myOrigins they removed it and placed it under Southeast Asia. So I guess it'll be under Southeast Asia which is under the main East Asia category. But keep us informed, I'm curious about it.

Well my results are in...78% central and western Europe, 16% Asia minor and 6% North African.

I have ordered a FF test for my Dad, so we'll see if anything resembling Aboriginal shows up in his results.

I am just about to run my raw data through GedMatch, so I'll see if it comes up with anything else.

Interesting results sarahmj and thanks for posting!
Results may be skewed based on the sample populations and algorithms used. Hopefully this will improve with more people testing.
It will help once you know your Dads results as well

I ran my data through GedMatch MDLP World 22 and came up with 0.52% Austronesian....would that be the Aboriginal component?

Also I'm curious about these other small percentages....are they accurate or 'noise'??

                  Australian Aboriginal results.

I have tested with FTDNA. My mother is of Aboriginal descent and father European. With the new myorigins my Aboriginality is listed under East Asian.

                  On Gedmatch:

                  Dodecad K12b = South Asian
                  Eurogenes K13 Oracle = Oceana
                  MDLP K23b = Australoid.

The results % are almost identical.

I don't understand this part of your results at all - 16% Asia minor. I do not have any Asia Minor on my FTDNA. My mother's ancestors originate from Western Australia and South Australia.

It might make a difference what part of Australia your Aboriginal ancestors came from.
