  • New Pop Finder?

Any word on when the new Pop Finder is coming out? A few months ago they said it would be a few months.

The map in my PF results shows the Isles 96.77 which is what I expected. What can I learn from the new PF?

Few informations , back to november, were given. It was told they were attempting to separate Russian from Poland and that 50 populations samples from Europe may be used for their new algorythm. No fresh news for a while but the new population finder will be far more precise for sure.

I would like to know what the 50 populations are. Are there Siberian samples? Arctic peoples samples?

Rumors of revised Population Finder have been mentioned here the last few months to a year, but I haven't seen any response from FTDNA, is this facts or just wishful information customers want..it seems FTDNA is similar to 23andme constant questions that keep coming up but neither company likes to respond, more question at 23andme left unanswered...

You might found out that 50% is British ad 46.77% is Irish. Regardless PF is complete crap compared to 23andme, ancestry and gedmatch admixture tools.

This is a quote from a report by Tim Janzen about the Rootstech conference: "Bennett Greenspan from Family Tree DNA announced that he expects an updated version of Population Finder to be available for customers who have done Family Finder within 6 to 8 weeks." See http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.co...-02/1392018034

That was posted on Feb. 10. So, that means an updated version of Population Finder by about early April. Given the well-known problems with estimating deadlines in genetic genealogy, let's just say this spring.

I think FTDNA is serious about this timetable. At the conference in November it was announced that they will use 50 European reference populations, instead of the present 20. If FTDNA is willing to make specific announcements of that sort (not a rumor) in public, I think the long overdue update should come in the relatively near future.

                Hi,

What Tim for got to mention was that Bennett said "Don't quote me on this." right before the rest.

Do you remember who said this?

I think that my results should be 100% Irish but I am pleased with the FF test. It is a great test for 74 euros and I would recommend it to my friends.

You're asking about this from my previous post: "At the conference in November it was announced that they will use 50 European reference populations, instead of the present 20."

Checking my notes, that statement was made during FTDNA's Engineering/IT presentation. The presentation was started by Jason Wang, CTO, but the bulk of the presentation was by Elliot Greenspan. So, I think it was Elliot who made that statement.

If Greenspan stated , don't quote me on this, refering to Pop-Finder, a refinement may be on the horizon, but that could be a long way off....

How would the scientists be able to separate the autosomal dna of the Isles. The Isles have been populated continuously since the last LGM and at least 8,000,000 people in England claim Irish descent. That is nearly twice the population of Ireland.

                          Thanks, MMaddi, that was helpful!

I too am happy with my Pop Finder results, but I'm curious to see what an updated version will come up with.

If a refinement is a long way off then the reason is that the autosomal dna is so mixed up that the scientists aren't able to separate the local populations.

I'm looking forward to seeing how my mixed bag of DNA from Western Europe will be subdivide. To say that my ancestors came from anywhere, I sort of have to go back 6, 7, 8, 9 or more generations. I think they need to develop an admixture test for Early Colonial Families.
