Oh, I didn't notice this page!
According to the author, ethnicity will be shared with up to 5th cousins. I guess this makes sense when you have hundreds of matches, but when you have no more than 25 matches and only a 4th cousin... Oh well...

Sarcasm aside, No but I'd like for my ancestry to actually show for what it is, in great detail. Correct detail.
Well, I feel for you! My mtDNA full sequence informed me that, in one way, I am a Gorilla. Now, of course, I feel
that I am a 500 pound Gorilla, and I like that. What it said
was, of course, that I share one amino acid with, among
primates, only Gorillas ... not people nor chimps nor
orangutans. But unfortunately it turns out that I also
share this amino acid with dogs, baboons, beavers, chickens,
carp, and yeast, among many others.

Unfortunately, NO Pop Finder replacement will satisfy
everybody if they demand exactness, unless they and
their ancestors all lived in the same village for centuries, and that village has been well tested.

And even then ... I have one line that was on a small island for 3 or 4 generations. They had very gossipy church records and I found that my 4 great aunt, a spinster of 42, regularly bought from a salesman who traveled by boat. One time the salesman sent his son, and the 4 great aunt had a child of markedly mixed ethnicity.

And another surname that is only found in one village turns out to be (in my line) not German but half German/half Danish. And the Danish turns out to be a bit Norwegian and a bit Moravian, all back in the 1700s. And some of the odd names in the village are likely Wendish in origin.

As long as I'm not "Orcadian" and "Middle Eastern" I'll be happy. I'm neither, mostly Central/Eastern European.

          ^^ Btw, that's a neat story JohnG.

The new PF is reportedly scheduled for release on May 1.

I think all that FTDNA will be doing this weekend is attempting to fix the numerous problems with the Y haplotree.

First time I saw any mention of this. If I had seen before, possibly would not have rushed in and made sure all the kits I manage or co-manage were opted out. But think I will leave them opted out for now (am primary on those I co-manage, and pretty sure I am the only one who looks; do not like doing anything which decreases further their privacy)

                  Ethnicity

At 23, one of my matches asked me if I knew or suspected where the small segment of estimated Sub Saharan African came from in my Ancestry Composition. Until that time, I was aware of NA legends (still unproven) but nothing else more exciting than UK origins with a little German way back. I was grateful for this being pointed out and have been looking for matches to this segment for clues.

My point here is that sharing this information might not be a bad thing. Sometimes someone else may pick up on clues that I have overlooked.

I'm looking forward to the new pop finder and hope it too will find this mysterious segment... in me as well as other close family members who have tested here. Maybe it will give me more information that will help in further discoveries.

So if they're limiting it to only those ancestries we share in common, why put a limit on the top 3? What if I and a match share 4 ethnicities in common and that's important to our particular situation? Not to mention that just because a particular ethnicity doesn't show up in one does not mean that it's not in the genealogy of the other. Thank goodness for Gedmatch.

                      Completely agree

                      • How will these ethnicities be determined/grouped?

In their example they use terms such as "European","African","Asian", "Middle Eastern"- these are far too broad. There is a big difference between "Russian" and "France", which are two European nations, and "India" and "China".

Do we know if they plan on differentiating countries or just continents? All that I wanted was a Gedmatch type breakdown, period.

Well, if what I've been told is true, we'll all know in a few day's time. Rollout is supposedly scheduled for May 1.

Hmmm I would not expect that to happen since engineering and support is currently dealing with all issues with the new YDNA haplogroup tree. For FTDNA's sake I hope they don't , but I would be happy to see new PF results when they are ready and all the reported YDNA issues are resolved.

I suppose FTDNA could surprise the world by rolling out a new PF without it having dozens of bugs ... but then again pigs might fly, too.
