I doubt that it is because of that it is most likely because of what I described at http://forums.familytreedna.com/show...53&postcount=4

Dutch Matches and Portuguese Matches Silva question
I found out that the Silva last name on my mother's side does come from a Portuguese man, 99% chances of being from Azores, Portugal. As most of the Portuguese that came to Brazil before the immigration laws, which these family people probably did since they were already in Brazil and procreating before that.

Now, there in Azores history, the founder of the Island or the person in charge was a German man called Willem van der Haegen. His last name translated to Portuguese became Silveira and also later shorten to Silva.

My DNA question. My mother side of the family has no knowledge of German descent at all. But I do have matches that have ancestors there for a long time (according to their tree).

Could FF DNA go as far as 1700?

I wonder if my ancestors came from him, not just because of the surname, but also because of German connections.

    What do you experts think?

Roberta I am not an expert but I was born in the Azores, and have some genealogical records of my ancestry tracing back to the 1500's.

Regarding the connection between the surname Silva and Silveira don't read too much into it naming traditions in the Azores up until the last century were very inconsistent. When a child was baptized only a given name was recorded usually upon adulthood men chose a surname usually the fathers surname but often also the maternal grandfathers surname, or even a different surname from one of the ancestral lines.

The Azores were primarily settled by the Portuguese but also Flemish, Jews and the descendents of Berber captives that were not ransomed when Ceuta was captured by the Portuguese in 1415.

I have several FF matches that I share a common ancestor with in the 1600's.

If you have Azorean ancestry like you suspect your Dutch matches are likely from the Flemish ancestors most of which were from Bruges, in Flanders.

    My myOrigins results are.

    69% Southern Europe
    15% Scandinavia
    12% British Isles
    5% North Africa

Here is some more of my DNA results hopefully this helps you.
