Color me confused HELP

    Color me confused HELP

    Perhaps I can get some assistance here. My results have just come and and it raises some questions.

    First off the other person I had tested who is a posited 1st Cousin 1XR is not listed in matches, which isn't all too surprising since paternity is a possible issue. But when I run the raw data from both of us at http://www.math.mun.ca/ David Pike's comparison site we see several single segment matches on several chromosomes.

    I have also uploaded both to GEDMATCH but it's taking forever to tokenize and get a one to one comparison.

    Secondly in the matches surname lists there are several bolded surnames which, if I am understanding correctly, means they are supposed to match the surnames in my list. Yet they don't. So why are they bolded?

    I'm not familiar with David Pike's program, so I can't respond to that. However, FTDNA uses a phonetic algorithm that tries to estimate similar sounding or spelling names, maybe they start with the same letter or are similar in size. It's just a estimate to take into account that spellings change over time. There is an odd word starting with an A that refers to it, but I think it's also called Soundex.

      Soundex is the correct term. There are several different Soundex systems, and FTDNA uses American Soundex:



      With this system, you'll definitely get some names that are different from your names, but they do have the same soundex code.

      PS. For those in the U.S., look at your driver's license. I'm not sure if all states do this, but you may find the soundex code for your surname as the first few characters of your DL number
