How many suggested third cousins do you have in Family Finder?
I only have one suggested 3rd cousin, a citizen of Finland. (I live in the Midwest U.S.) My great-grandmother immigrated from Sweden when she was 14 years old. I've picked up quite a few FamilyFinder cousins who are of Swedish, Finnish or mixed Swedish-Finnish ancestry.
The other day, my mother showed me a photo of my great-grandmother. Strange as this may sound, I have her jaw line. So something definitely has been passed on through the generations.
Out of 69 matches, my mom has five 3rd cousins. Two won't respond to my emails. As far the other three, we have never been able to determine who our common ancestors were, but two of the three are predicted to be related to each other (that is mom and two of them share a nearly identical longest segment of 30 cM.) The third person who accepted contact seemed to be interested in tracing only one of her lines and never would send me info on the others.
Out of 48 matches, I have three 3rd cousins. Two of them are the same two people who share over 30 cM with my mom. So, they're predicted to be 3rd cousins to both me and my mom, yet none of us can figure out how we could be related!
Out of 42 matches, my cousin has one predicted 3rd cousin, who is actually known to be his 4th cousin. This man is my mom's 3rd cousin, but he is predicted to be her 5th to remote cousin.
I have 3 predicted third cousins out of a total of 193 matches. I've not been able to find a connection to any of the three and suspect they are more distant than the predicted relationship.
I have only 1 predicted 3rd cousin match out of 66. So far we cannot figure out which line is our common connection. I have had this match for a year. I have zero predicted 3rd cousins on 23andMe, out of 460 matches.
I have 9 predicted 3rd cousins out of 150 total. One I actually recruited is a known 2nd cousin once removed. She is the only one who has more than one segment over 5 cM in size.
While it is certainly possible to have a known 3rd cousin sharing just one long segment, I suspect those are outliers. I feel much more comfortable with 3rd cousin predictions based on more than one shared segment over 5 cM in size.
