  • British colonials

My mother and I received two mutual matches: A New England descendant match and a southern colonial descendant match. My mother also received two more southern colonials but I did not share them. The New Englander we share appears connected to common cousins related to the Churchill family -- I believe one of my maternal grandmother's great-grandparents was a Churchill.

All new matches were dated December 16.

      • Since the 15th of Dec., I've gotten 14 new matches. Since most of them are 5th to remote, I really don't do anything with them. If one of them contacts me, I'll answer back, but at the moment I'm not making contact with new matches.

I'm still trying to get through my "leaf" matches over at Ancestry, which at least give me a start on a place to look with the pedigree trees they show and the common surname list. LOL

          • I had intended to go out for a little bird-watching, but the cold temps discouraged this old guy. So I'm browsing around the internet. I have 2 new matches, but very low strength. The one who gives a bit of info is from Mississippi, which is probably distantly connected to my maternal line in some way. "In common with" triangulations don't seem to ring a bell.

not sure how it helps anyone if they do not provide info on where there families are from.

              • I just jumped from 538 t0 616! Furthermore, a large chunk of those are "Parent/Child"! I know I was stationed around the world back when I was in the army. But I really couldn't have sired all those illegitimate children. What's going on here?

                  • Yep, looks like an across-the-board problem here.

                    • My mother had 33 pages of matches earlier today. Now she has 41 and all the new ones have a parent/child relationship!

                      • I wonder if we all have the same ones? I see names that appear to be of all nationalities. Maybe they uploaded a whole new batch as relatives to everyone in the database??? Are they still working with the holiday skeleton crew, by any chance?

                        • Have just logged in and have new matches that look normal, so I assume they have fixed the glitch.

Well, they fixed it. Now I'm down to just 2 new ones (low strength). One is of Finnish origin, and the other may be of Irish extraction (I didn't look all that closely).

                            • I just noticed a new batch of FF matches; five new ones in my case. Who knows how they connect to me, though.

                              • I have fond memories of this thread. The excitement as each new match slowly trickled in. 12 kits later (average probably about 850 matches per kit) = 10,000 matches now (great!) the 'problem' has shifted from not enough matches to how to find the potentially meaningful needles in the haystack. I long ago stopped emailing the 4th and 5th to distant cousins who did not post names or trees and I find I am increasingly focused on the first few pages of top closest matches but I do worry that I might be missing a few gems buried further down the lists.

Most of my success have come from finding 3rd and 4th cousins and asking them to test but I have had a small number of lucky matches where people have tested themselves and the common ancestor has been easily spot table within fairy recent genealogical times.

                                Earl.
