  • I have not been notified of any Family Finder matches, not even when my own father's kit went through.

I have also never received a notification for a new Y DNA match at any level.

I do, however, often receive notifications of new mtDNA matches, even those at a GD of 3, which are basically worthless genealogically.

There are options under the Match & Email Settings for receiving email notification for FF matches at the following levels:
      • Immediate
      • Close
      • Distant
      • Speculative

      See the screenshot below.

      • I have yes for all of the settings on FF but have still only received the one mail notification, so I just assumed that this was just another annoying bug and that the settings were related to visibility and nothing more. Having said that I may well wonder whether they have any effect on visibility as I am very rarely contacted by anyone.

They do have a mutual effect on visibility. Change to No. Save. Log out. Wait 10-15 minutes. Login. Verify the number of Family Finder matches. (I would recommend to only play with the distant and speculative matches, so you do not scare more closely related people that you had vanished.) Return back to Yes.

          • (edited) I see DNA beat me to it.

I have gotten email notifications for each close relative match (children/parent/grandparent) but that's it. I think the problem is people think they are turning off email notifications concerning speculative matches (or whatever), which don't get emailed anyway, but what they are actually doing by altering the setting is turning off matches at that level.

There was a brief period when I downloaded my chromosome browser match list, and I got details of ALL matches no matter their settings (including a second-ish cousin that has never shown up before or after). I think that glitch has since been patched.

            • As for me, I don't need to be notified. I do my own checking, frequently.

              • I donĀ“t see any point in switching to no and back to yes. I have no need to see how many disappear and come back again.

                • I have two new matches this morning (Just checked myself as suggested!)

                  • The Norwegian Variable

I count 5 new matches for my father -- all Norwegian-related. I share 1 of these Norwegian matches with my dad and also received a British colonial type match as well -- it's difficult though to determine if this person is connected to my maternal grandmother's New Englanders or my maternal grandfather's southern U.S. colonials (most often I can tell by the ancestral surnames). This last match of mine too, although connected to my mother's side of the family, does not appear on my mom's list of cousins.

Where I grew up, it is not unusual to see a Norwegian descendant marry a Quebec one. I'm seeing examples of this every once and a while with my dad's DNA cousins as time passes. (My father had 1 Norwegian grandmother and 1 who was a French-Canadian/Acadian descendant.)

                    • New matches dated 11/11...1 5th to distant for my grandmother, nothing for my dad, 1 5th to distant for me, 1 4th to remote for son B (the same match listed as 5th to distant for me) and none for son A.

                        • I receieved 4 mails -a mail per kit that results are posted.

I received a mail per each existing kit that new matches are found (expected as the new kits are close relatives to the existing kits).

But when I log in - the 4 kits are still "waiting for results" and the when I log in on the older kits accounts - there are no new new matches

                            Same here....

I have one kit that is awaiting results but on Friday I received an email stating the kit has new matches. When I login it still states awaiting results. Then I received an email for all the kits that I manage that are a close match stating they have new matches but again there was nothing new. Hopefully this is not a new glitch with results, we have enough stuff not working right we don't need any new issues.

                            • And now I have 512 FF matches (or was it 412). My Alzheimer's (or whatever) is getting to me. One of the two newest ones has a Ukrainian last name, but I see it's from California. I think that could connect to my Austrian relatives, but that's just a guess.

I just checked in at Ancestry, and I (accidentally) saw that the above (seemingly Ukrainian) surname match is attached to my Daniel Boone branch (Linville).
