I'm interested in knowing how you managed to connect the dots that far back so quickly. With 1250 matches, you sound very Ashkenazi.

    What's your secret method?

    • Looking at my matches today (not the "advanced" matches), I have 13 pages. Up to a few days ago or so, I only had two matches on that last page. Now it has crept up to five, although those five are not new. So a few have been inserted somewhere along the line.

100% unless there is something that I don't know about and isn't mentioned in the records.

Jewish birth records for males (actually circumcision records) in Fürth bei Nürnberg go back to 1698. That's why I said that there could be a closer connection in a place where records don't start until the early 19th century.

German Jews were very intermarried which is of course why one gets so many matches.

        • I have to change that last answer. The connection is through Baiersdorf, not Fürth, and is very likely but not proven. If the details interest you, send me an email or other message.

          • A good week

All three of the accounts I manage got new cousins this past week -- and some were mutual cousins between me and my parents.

In general, I can make a pretty good guess as to which of my 4 grandparents each cousin is related to -- by ethnicity or ancestral names. This week, two matches led to more detailed information, however. One cousin shares 3x great-grandparents with my mother. A second cousin shares 3 of my mother's ancestral names and we have found at least one common ancestor between our two families and there might be more.

            • PD holten I find quickest way of finding the latest matches is to set all matches then click on excell copy and paste to a spreadsheet and sort by date, this gives me names contact numbers and then can go back and check them out on chromosome browser.
my computer seems to be a bit slower if i wait for it load the all matches then use the sort feature on page then resort to get latest matches on top

                • Well, I noted just now that I must have one new match, since page 13 now has six. I think I spotted the new one, as one of two I hadn't noticed before. But the big problem is that these various new ones lately do not provide surnames and trees.

I seem to have the occasional Scotch person popping up. I don't know whether that means I have a bit of Scotch ancestry, since they probably also have other elements in their ancestry. But I would like to find out I have some Scotch in me. Maybe that's why I tend to be a skinflint?

Patience They might just be taking a little while to load them all in; it took me a couple of days to fill in all the details.

                        • I'm as confused now as I ever was, regarding my earliest known ancestress. I'm firmly convinced of a British Isles origin. But then where? Although I have a HVR1+HVR2 match in early Massachusetts (SMGF), she may actually trace to those early tobacco growers in tidewater Virginia. The surname Moore pops up quite frequently in the FF surname collections. One Moore married an Elizabeth Merritt in London, and their daughter Katherine ended up (or her descendant line) in Anson County, North Carolina!; Right where my earliest known ancestress was supposedly born. I was at that point years ago, but eventually rejected it for some reason. Hmm...

                              • A couple of matches for my mother this week and one for me. My father received no matches this week. However, when I used the "in common with" command, both my father and me and this new match share common cousins (not related to my mother).
