I'm 100% percent Europe. I have 1/8 German ancestry so I was surprised I'm 100% percent Europe. I am waiting for my mtFullSequence to give me more info on my ancestry. My father's side is all Russian with some Polish. My mother's side is Russian and German.
My kit is 100% Europe (Orcadian) +-0.01%. It's interesting (to me, anyway) that my genealogy on paper is a mixed bag but it's all ultimately Northern European and the latest immigration is in the 1700's - so Colonial Americans going way back. I had Dr. McDonald run an analysis and he concurred, he said I was "100% English". But as I understand it his algorithms are looking at averages, so it makes sense that Scottish, Swiss, German, English, etc could average out to "English".
I find this highly unlikely. My brother's Y-DNA shows only 1% of Recent Ancestral Origins as French. We are showing more matches in common with those of English and German ancestry.
Genealogical research points to origins in Germany, England and Scotland and/or Wales.

Well your research shows Germany and Britain and what country is in between those two? France. So PF is showing you has roughly half Brit and half German and if you had to put that place on a map that would be France. But it doesn't mean you have any French ancestry.
On the other hand English and Irish migrated to Britanney and Germans have a strong presence in border areas. So who knows? Modern English is a mixture of Anglo Saxon German and French

So are the PF results displaying, as you say, what your different ethnic make-ups would combine to as (based on location), or I was under the impression that they simply stated the most closely related population or subgroup population of the research samples that are listed here? So for example my Western European results come out to Orcadian and French. But my ancestry is primarily English and Czech, but neither of those ethnic groups are a sample population so they chose the closest. Or I guess France would geographically be halfway between Britain and the Czech Republic. So either way, but which is it?
My mother's Illumina PF was originally reported 100% Jewish, and has since been considerably revised. You might want to call the office to verify the results.
I find this feature, basically useless. Why? Because it is based on very few populations and population samples, within limited geographical areas. Check out the FAQS and the discussions. I may be wrong and if I am, let me know.

No I am all confused lol.
The truth is ftdna never really explained how we should interpret it. If you want a better analysis email your raw data to Dr. McDonald, email is on this page http://chemistry.illinois.edu/facult..._McDonald.html He has a lot more populations.

I wouldn't say it's useless. It's a ballpark figure for ethnic ancestry. For some people it can be very helpful, for others it doesn't tell them anything they didn't already know. And for some, like me, it creates a whole new mystery to be solved. I'm not sure I completely trust the results, but they're interesting, if nothing else.
