  • CentiMorgan Definition Question

I am puzzled by the definition of cM as a 1% probability of recombination occurring in one generation. There seem to be an average of 150cM or so per chromosome. If each chromosome recombines only once per generation, how is it possible to get a 1% probability of recombination. I can see only one chance for each of the 150cM in the chromosome(on average. What am I overlooking?

A chromosome pair can cross over from zero to more than 6 times during the process called meiosis; the average differs by chromosome number, sex, etc. Across all 22 chromosomes the average is around 1.5 as you say.

Well I guess that solves the mystery.

      Thank you!
