  • Question about Family Finder

    Hello Everyone,

I have a quick question. My PF test results tell me that I am:

    1. Orcadian at 90.27% with a ±2.94% margin of error.

    2. Palestinian, Adygei, Bedouin, Bedouin South, Druze, Iranian, Jewish at 9.73% with a ±2.94% margin of error.

My question is what region of the world this is telling me I am from?

Also where does the middle eastern percentage come from?

    thanks much,

    David

    Hi Davidj
It is my understanding that the percentage of Middle Eastern given to most Europeans is analogous to Geno 2.0’s percentage of Neanderthal given to most testers. That is to say it is not genealogically relevant

Ah, interesting! Just to make sure I am understanding this correctly. Are you saying that the family finder tests for Neanderthal DNA?

      thanks much,

      David

No, the Geno 2.0 test does.

The point I may have failed to make is that genealogical research will most likly not uncover the source of the Middle Eastern DNA signature.

There are Neanderthal SNPs among the family finder SNP raw data. Here are some of them.

look to the origins of your DNA cousins

Hopefully, the new and more accurate Population Finder will come out soon. In the meantime, I suggest looking at the known family origins of your DNA cousins -- that might give you a clue as to where some of your recent ancestors originated. Using my mother as an example: Here and on 23 and Me, she gets many matches who are New Englanders, descendants of southern U.S. colonials and a mixture of Swedes and Finns. Her mother had New England roots. Her father's ancestry included colonials from Virginia and Maryland and his mother immigrated from Sweden, from an old province that had been settled by Finns centuries ago.

Another example, my dad: He had a Norwegian grandma and a French-Canadian one. He gets many Norwegian and French-related matches. His French matches are usually descendants of the early settlers of Quebec or old Acadia, but he also gets Haitians, Cajuns of Louisiana and Texas and descendants of Huguenots (French protestants). I know that one of his female ancestors from Quebec immigrated to Haiti after her first husband died. Her grown children stayed in Quebec. Another direct female ancestor was born in Louisiana and immigrated to Quebec.

I share many of my parents' DNA cousins.

These are my alleles for these SNPs. I found the SNP list on the SNPedia, com site and checked them out in my raw data. Does everyone in the Orcadian population have the same alleles for these specific SNPs?
