  • How accurate/representative is the reference population?

FTDNA has a list of reference populations. I have been tested 100% Malay with an error margin of 0,02% (seems quite accurate to me). I know that Indonesia for example also have Javanese, Balinese, etc. as population, which are not on the FTDNA list.

What if I am actually Javanese/Balinse, how does that appear in the Population Finder of FTDNA?

My concern is that I might not be (100%) Malay but for practical reasons FTDNA put Malay, Javanese, Balinese, etc. all together under the name: Malay

That would also appear as Malay. There are only so many reference populations, and if your exact population is not listed, it will find the next-closest one. Unfortunately I don't think there's any genetic test that can distinguish reliably between different Indonesian ethnic groups at this time.

In Indonesia, we considered (almost) all of us as Malays. Malay has 2 meaning here. First as an ethnic, second as a sub-race (another term for Malayo-Austronesian).
