  • X match to father how relevant to son

If your father has an X match how relevant is it to you as a male?

  • #2
Since, as a male, your father has only one x chromosome, which he received from his mother, the common ancestors for the shared x segment with this match are to be found in the lines of ancestry on your father's mother's side. The x chromosome has a unique pattern of inheritance, especially in a male, so you can further narrow down in which lines the common ancestors may be found.

Here's link to a chart showing which ancestors contribute to a male's x chromosome - http://www.thegeneticgenealogist.com.../NewChart4.jpg. You can use the chart with your family tree to see who the common ancestors may be. If your father's match is also male, the chart could be used with his family tree too.
