R1a Multiple Peak Questions

  • R1a Multiple Peak Questions

    Our Byrne Project has over 400 members, most of whom are R1b. We have only seven R1a so lack familiarity with that haplogroup. Four of the seven have the same multiple peaks for 464--12 12 15 15 16, while one other has 12 12 12 12 15 15 15 15 15 16! Two of the four (they are a 67/1 match) also have 459=9 10 10 and CDY=35 36 39.
    Questions: Is there any special significance to all these multiple peaks? Are they most common in R1a? Does a multiple peak at one marker trigger others?

    I sent the same query to the administrators of the two large R1a projects, and neither answered, so I tried here. Am I asking a dumb question, or is R1a dormant?

        Extra alleles (more than the ordinary number) at DYS464, DYS459, and CDY are of only mild significance, because:

        - They recur often throughout the haplotree

        - Earlier technologies did not always detect them reliably, so older-posted Y-STR results may not show extra alleles that are actually present.

        Extra alleles are not particularly common in the R1a haplogroup as a whole, but particular clades do commonly have them (e.g., R-CTS11962).

        Extra alleles at DYS459, DYS464, and CDY often occur together because--if my understanding is correct--all three of these occur in a duplicative region that is sometimes reduplicated en masse.

          Multiple Peaks

          The five R1a in the Byrne Project who have multiple peaks all appear to be CTS11962, judging by their shared STR values, although only one of them is SNP confirmed. The other two R1a, who do not appear to be related to those five, do not have multiple peaks. So, CTS11192 seems to be the culprit. Thanks for the clarification.
