  • Y-67 with no matches above 12. What now?

I manage my husband's profile. He's done FF, mtDNA, and Y up to 67 markers. He's adopted but has reunited with his birth mother and has info on his birth father's family. I don't doubt his mother's report of who his father is, and the resemblance is uncanny, but my experiences with my own family's DNA (NPEs for my mother and now probably my father - testing in progress) have led me to be very cautious about using word of mouth and resemblances as "proof" of anything. To be clear though, I'm not looking for proof of paternity, but rather a connection with the surname, which is unique and hails from a somewhat specific area in Germany, from what I can tell.

Anyway, my questions. At 12 markers he's got 14 matches with a genetic distance of 0. He is designated as R-M269. Some of his matches say R-M269, but others say R-L21, R-L23, one says R-SRY2627 and one R-P311. Either they haven't done more than 12 or they don't match him past 12. Do I just wait for more people to test? The two brothers that know about him aren't amenable to testing, he's never spoken with his father but I doubt there'd be any interest there either, and I guess I could start reaching out to male cousins with the same surname but I have no clue where to point them in regard to which tests to take, if they were interested. He's got no surname matches in FF, and there's no surname project for him to join. He's already on YSearch and has one match that corresponds with one of the 12 marker matches that he doesn't match past 12.

So... thoughts? What's next? I am VERY new at this and appreciate input for a beginner. Thanks!

BigY with analysis by YFull. It will provide his terminal SNP and some novel SNPs. You will have a list of matches. The more SNPs in common the closer the relationship. Even with the BigY test, the list of matches will likely be limited and the common ancestor will probably still be from several thousands of years in the past, long before a genealogical connection can be made, but it will be better than what you have now. BigY is much better than Geno 2.0, Chromo2, and any upcoming SNP-packs not only because it covers more SNPs but also because it can find novel SNPs which will prove a closer relationship to other people of the same terminal SNP.

Can you give us his Ysearch ID?

Also, have you asked the haplogroup project administrator who his nearest neighbors are?

If you have no matches at 67 markers you won't have any matches in the Big-Y test. You should wait until there is another sale on before you take any other tests and until you get 67 match. Has he any 57/67 matches at ysearch?

That's not true. I have a kit that doesn't have any 67 marker matches but has 15 BigY matches.

Sure! His YSearch ID is 7DB4F. Please let me know if there's anything there I can tweak to get more info. Also, he's not currently in a haplogroup project. He was in one, R1b1*, but got removed some time back because they said he matched R1b1a2, and then with me concentrating fully on his adoption search I neglected to put him into another one. I will do it today.

Thank you to all who've responded. I appreciate your time.

I'm not sure how that's figured but he's got a 67 marker comparison with a genetic distance of 13 as his closest match, and that says "L150*-Modal" as the name, and from there it's a distance of 15 on up. Mind you, I'm not terribly familiar with how to use YSearch so I may be missing out on something!

He has no matches at 57/67. This may be the best project to get some advice. https://www.familytreedna.com/public/ht35new/

So he is closer in SNP than haplotype. That is a new one.

I've put in a request to join that one, and the R_R1b ALL Subclades project too. I think that's enough to get me started! Thanks so much; I appreciate the suggestions!

I'm sure it's much more common than you think.

What makes you think he is P312- U106- ?

He is closest to the L150* modal.

The problem is the modals are incorrect a lot of times. There's no replacement for SNP testing and BigY is the best way to do SNP testing.

Yes, you are right but the Big-Y is a out of price range for most testers.
Everyone who is P312 or U106 should have the same number of SNPs back to Y-Adam so one is paying for SNPs that they don't need. One may find only 20-30 new SNPs in their Y-line and it is a lot of money for 30 SNPs. The test needs to be refined.
