Though I thought it was the Norwegians who mostly came down the West coast, and Danes the other side. Northumbria etc.

Interesting reading, I've alway's loved to read and study about the Viking's, my Y-DNA is from Wales, I haven't had my Mother's side done yet, maybe I'll find some Viking genes on her side, she has alot of Saxon surnames in her family.

        Viking Habits

I sailed one of the Viking routes in 1986 in my 37 foot sailboat, with one old buddy to stand change of watch. The engine was never run.
I noted that on turning the southern end of Oslofjord, it was roughly equidistant to most places on the East coast of Britain.
Four Doegr out, we smelt the landsmoke and "made landfall" by sighting a lightship just off the Thames estuary. The first land we saw was Normandy as we turned right into the English Channel.
We continued to the Isle of Wight on the South Coast making five Doegr in all.
I think the average Norse Knorr would make the same time, and a Drakkar would be faster than us.
Instruments? Apart from an old Satnav which gave a confirmatory fix about every six hours, we had a compass and depth sounder. Without those, I figured we could still have made the same voyage in the same way.

(Doegr= Norse measure equal to a twenty four hour sail.)
