  • GD Discrepancy

    Hi,

I had my second cousin tested to confirm a relationship with a supposed 7th cousin in a Frazer DNA project I'm working on. FTDNA counts GD = 3 for 37 STRs. I count GD = 4. Any reason why?

Multi-peak markers aren't counted the same way as single peak markers. FTDNA may be counting the CDY difference as 1 and I assume you are counting it as 2.

I checked their "Learning Center" and learned they didn't cover this when I searched for "Genetic Distance". I sure wish we had the old FAQ back.

      Thanks Jim,

Yes, it was difficult and confusing to find information, but I did get a response from FTDNA:

"Thank you for your email. CDY is counted using the infinite allele method. Basically this marker is so volatile we can see multiple numeric value jumps in a single mutation. So even if it is off by five it would still only be counted as a genetic distance of 1."
