My hologroup didn't change still R-A5533 I must have had a good sample as I have had these test run from it Y37 markers, Y67 markers, Y111 markers, DF13, family finder, full mtDNA, Big Y500 and the Big Y700 without have to send a new sample. Didn't know they could run that many test from one sample, I must have been lucky ?
FTDNA has been sending two vials with their kits for a number of years, so if you filled both, it is possible that they were able to do all those tests with the sample from them. In late 2019, I wanted to have the Big Y-700 done for one account I manage, which had already done the following tests: Y-67, mtFull Sequence, one SNP test, upgrade to Y-111, an SNP pack, and Big Y-500. This individual had also submitted two extra vials in 2013, but I was concerned that they and the original two vials may have all been used with all those tests. I wanted to know if the Big Y-700 could be completed, so I contacted Customer Support, and they told me the 2013 vials were still in storage, and the other two were still in use (thus, only one vial had done all those tests, and a still-unused original vial was still available to use).

It all depends upon how good the sample is. Another kit I manage had done only FF, Y-67, and upgrade to Y-111 using the original two vials. There was not enough sample left to complete the Big Y-700, and that person died before he could submit additional vials. I always advise, especially for older male individuals, to ask for additional vials ahead of time (or even when ordering the original kit), for just these reasons. You never know what other tests you may want to do in the future.

Thank you KATM for the information. I submitted only the original two vials in 2012 didn't know then that you could get extra vials with your order are I would have done that as I am getting pretty old 79 next week but will probably not have any more test done.

The Big Y-700 test is meant to discover new Y-DNA SNPs, so for now, there is nothing to top it, certainly not at FTDNA. But we don't know what lies ahead in genetic genealogy, so perhaps there might be yet another test sometime in the future, whether for Y-DNA or something else. For now, it is the top of the line, and I think we can both be satisfied that in doing the Big Y-700 (and all the other tests), we have done all we can.

I, too, started testing myself and others in 2012. I don't recall how I found out that you could ask for extra vials (perhaps I read it here in the forums?), but once I knew it might be useful, I asked for them. As with my first example in my last post, you seem to have had a very good sample, and don't need extra vials at this point. Back before I started testing, I understand that FTDNA used to send three vials with kits. They ultimately decided two vials were enough.

              • So no one has gotten in BigY results since Feb 22nd? Did they shut down the lab for maintenance?

                • I have been waiting on a Big Y upgrade batched on Jan 4 in batch 1157. Seems like it is taking forever.

That was only 10 weeks, that is faster than average I think. Currently they promise 13 to 15 weeks.

                        • I'm in 1154, no results yet. Predicted 3/17-3/31....hopefully no delay, which is becoming likely because 1157 have already been posted, ugh....

Since my 1154 and another 1157 have been posted, you can contact FTDNA and see what's going on ? Maybe they do a re-run ?
