  • High population of V in Skane Sweden.

    I followed a link given on another forum to this website;

    Its in Swedish with a little English.
    It mentions that Skane, in Southern Sweden, has a high population of hapolgroup V. I think only a small group of people were tested, so im not sure how accurate this is.
    It also appears from this article that hg H isnt very big in the Skane area. Maybe that is why V gets a bigger representation?

    My query is if anyone knows more about this.
    My interest is that my maternal side is Danish, and lived not far from Skane. Denmark had control of Skane for a while in the c1600/1700's. (Cant remember the dates exactly, will have to check)
    I can also track some of my Danish male lines back through Denmark to Sweden, particularly Skane in one case.
    Im wondering if Skane might have a influence on my hp being V.

    High percentage of U5b1 as well

    The mtDNA in Scania (Skane) is interesting because of the high population of V and U5b1, both very typical of Saami mtDNA. In this link you may study the distribution of mtDNA among Saami women in Norway and Sweden.

    I have no explanation of this anomaly - the non typical mtDNA in the southern part of Scandinavia.

      I am curious about more information about how these samples was taken. According to the webpage the samples was made in Kittles et al. 1999

      ("Autosomal, mitochondrial, and Ychromosome DNA variation in Finland: evidence for a male-specific bottleneck")

      I have not found this article so far.

        The 16148 mutation in U5b1 is supposedly only seen among the Saami population, this mutations strongly suggest that we are here looking at a population closely related to the Saami.

          Interesting question. I saw that archeologists found a danish viking in Oxford with V1a1 and another danish viking V1a1 bearer was found directly in Denmark. There was a neolithic V1a sample found in Hungary though and 2x V1 samples from LBK in Germany.


          (Interestingly they have excavated about 4x other people with haplogroup V around Oxford, belonging already to Iron-Age populations there -see link above, page 3.)

          I'm interested how my maternal side happens to have V1a1, which they say is mostly found in Finland, though my maternal side is from Croatia, more precisely from a coastal village next to a big former Austro-Hungarian adriatic sea port. She has english & scottish influences from this side, but I have mostly oral history to rely on from this line, reflected in my grandmother's maiden name and in my autosomal data. Fits the history of british navy activity there during 19th century. About scandinavians down there, except for descendants of danish vikings via Britain, I would have no idea? Otherwise other mtDNA matches are often swedish and then german jewish sounding names (lots of them settled in more eastern regions of Europe already in medieval times, because there they had more freedom) and a few from Britain and Ireland. There is another V1a1 from Croatia, who is an autosomal match and comes from a city not far from this port city and which is historically connected to it too. I asked her, but she has no idea where she got that haplogroup from either. She seems to have heavy british and irish autosomal ancestry too. At least one italian from Sicilly, whom I found in the Internet, seams to have V1a1 too. He wrote that his ancestry is pure italian, but Sicilly was a Norman kingdom once and in more modern times had british troop presence too, but V was found in ancient Italy already (see link above).

          My closest full mtDNA matches are 2 steps apart, so it can be a long long time towards a common great grandmother... .

          Maybe interesting: the closest solid match (autosomal) I had in GedMatch was someone from south western England (Oxford is close, isn't it?), who told me his family basically was living there since at least 500 years. My father's side is mostly german & bohemian, with some dutch and swedish admix (one surname on my father's ancestral side is most common in Vaasa / Vasa, which is a heavily swedish influenced finnish city in Eastern Bothnia, built by Sweden. Some finnish autosomal matches had the same surname among their ancestors as well. I have no simultanous mtDNA AND autosomal match with a finn for now though. Btw. the city of Vasa was founded 1606 by Karl IX. Wasa and swedish is still frequently spoken there.).

          Maybe V spread via hungarian connections to the swedes and finns or via Denmark?

          Another thing which one might have to consider: finnish women were abducted as slaves by tartars and other oriental raiders, but vikings did abduct women from different regions as slaves and traded them already before as well. Population compositions can change over time as well. I would like to see more genetic data from different eras in Finland and especially from ancient Finland.
