  • Is Halogroup H or need more test for the rest of the letters?

I am in charge of my dad's mtdna. His results show halogroup H but among his matches there are people with Hxxxxx etc. How can he match with them without having more letters after the H. Does he need to do more tests to get more letters and then narrow down the matches?

    Which one test he had?

mtFull Sequence (also known as either FGS or FMS...) or mtDNA Plus (HVR1, HVR2) ?

He did the mtDNA Plus (HVR1, HVR2)

We are waiting on y37 and ff.

I see a 446 matches and they have all type of Halogroups, some are H and some are Hxxxxx.

How can I know how close they are? On FF it shows the closeness (3rd cousin etc).

Yes, your father needs mtFull Sequence for the rest of the letters.

Only when mtFull Sequence results are displayed, a Genetic Distance is shown that shows how many mismatches are: 0, 1, 2 and 3. As your father only has HVR1 & HVR2 test results, all the people shown are matching him exactly in those two areas.

Full mtDNA test has results for positions 1-16569. HVR1 covers 16001-16569, and HVR2 covers 1-574, however two locations 309 and 315 are completely excluded from any difference counts. As you can see comparisons with full mtDNA would use many more locations. So upgrading to FGS will eliminate many irrelevant matches. On the other hand, around 80% of mitochondrial DNA is always the same, so in reality upgrade to mtFull Sequence compares around three times more positions, than when comparing only HVR1 and HVR2.

Reality? In one kit, from 249 matches down to 15, and in another kit from 12 down to 1. Both kits within H haplogroup.
