  • What;'s Wrong with this Scenario

Greetings. This is my first post, and want to thank you for accepting me in this forum. I always write or speak of relatives still being here even if they have passed since I believe that death doesn't change the status of a family member and of course I understand that they do not "operate" in the current environment.
My wife & I have been involved in researching our family histories for near 20 years now and she was reminiscing about her cousins & things she grew up with. Her favorite cousin who we will call Jenny. Both Jenny & my wife are about the same age and Jenny's dad & my wife's dad are brothers.
My wife's sister is well into Genealogy as well and recently, she called my wife to tell her that she had been speaking to another cousin and Jenny's name came up in the discussion. According to her, Jenny is adopted and that news didn't sink in until about an hour later when my wife said, WHAT! how can that be? It's a fact that my wife's DNA uncovered a cousin who turns out to be the son of the daughter of Jenny's. So, now the question. If Jenny is adopted, how can she have the DNA of my wife & including the son of the daughter of Jenny?
Rumor: Jenny's mom may have become intimate with my wife's father and Jenny's mom had her and Jenny's father may not have wanted to admit to the intimacy and told Jenny she was adopted, but then again, if Jenny's Dad & my wife's Dad have the same DNA who would know the difference? Was it a spiteful move by Jenny's Dad to spite her mother?

It would be helpful to know the amount of DNA that your wife shares with Jenny's daughter's son, if I'm understanding the relationship you described correctly. You might want to consider if there is any possibility that the DNA shared between the two of them doesn't come from the brothers (your wife's father and her uncle, Jenny's father. Have you looked into the Jenny's grandson's total family tree going back. There are other people adding DNA to the son's mix and perhaps one of them actually connects to your wife as well. I have to say that this happens frequently in my family especially on my father's side as he's from early settlers in the colonies and on into West Virginia.

Just a suggestion. You might want to move this question/problem that needs solving to the General Interest Section of the Forum which deals with basic DNA questions, or the Section for Autosomal DNA questions or the Family Finder DNA test. From your description of the matches the FFDNA test was the one that was run. The particular section you've posted in usually deals with mtDNA or the mother's direct maternal line. There are fewer people doing the mtDNA testing so this area has a smaller group of people dealing with this type of DNA. Hope this helps.

Maybe it is true that Jenny is adopted and her biological parents are also within the family members. There are reported cases that a certain family opt to let their child be adopted, this is possible specially for single mothers. This is unacceptable, but better than abortion.
