  • W3a1d mtDNA (partial) - test again?

    Hi there,

    I originally tested via 23andme, receiving a W3a maternal haplogroup. Using the raw data provided by them, this was further extrapolated to W3a1d.

    However, I understand that the chipset used by 23andme is not the full sequence.

    Is there a way that their sequence can be extrapolated to the full sequence via FTDNA?

    I realise this is a rare clade, so am struggling to find anyone on any of the forums with this, but equally don't want to be ordering multiple tests from everywhere.

    How much more detail can the full sequence offer - is it likely to narrow a further clade or possibly change the haplogroup?

    In the current mtDNA tree (created Feb. 2016), W3a1d has no subclades. (See the current mtDNA tree at Phylotree, - scroll down a little bit past N2 to see Haplogroup W and its subclades).

    The subclade that was found for you is almost certainly correct. You won't know 100% unless you test 100% of your mtDNA, but apparently you have all of the mutations needed for this particular subclade. If you just want to know your subclade, you don't need to spend another cent.

    There may be a new subclade of W3a1d someday. Right now there aren't enough people to establish it yet.

    If you want to know where the subclade is found, check to see where people say their most distant maternal ancestor was born.

    So far, W3a1b is found in Estonia, and in part of Ukraine that was formerly in Poland. But this is based on perhaps 5 test results. This information will change as other people are tested.

    Check Ian Logan's list of known Haplogroup W3 sequences from GenBank (public source used in research).

    Also check the W3a1d section in the public pages of the W and N2a mtDNA Haplogroup Project. In the menu, under MTDNA Results, look under both RESULTS and MAP.

      Dear Tree, if you are interested in that type of analysis, you should have a full sequence test at FTDNA, and possibly (just possibly) submit your full sequence to the research.

      Existence of your full sequence mtDNA result might be a deciding factor in the creation of a new haplogroup or haplogroups.
