It's now on sale until Dec. 31, 2014.

You may want to read about Maternal Lineages at https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/dna-basics/mtdna/ (That is in the Family Tree DNA Learning Center.)

The test will permanently equip you to determine your most specific and up-to-date subclade assignment, so you can see where you fit on the mtDNA tree, both now and in the future as new branches are discovered. The test will also provide a list of your most relevant matches, who might provide details on the places of origin for their direct maternal lines.

        Thanks for the information.
I'm just a bit confused about my X-DNA matches.
I am East Asian but most of my matches are non-East Asians.
This is based on their autosomal DNA composition at GEDMATCH.
The non-East Asian matches are very noticeable at lower cM (less than 7).

My mother and her mother's mother are East Asian.
That's why I am considering Mt-DNA full sequence test.

It is going to be like that until percentages in the populations tested are at least at the same order of magnitude as in the world population. At this moment probably it is British Isles populations that are grossly over represented.

You also have to consider that your matches could be Europeans with a Filipino admixture. And that is neither theoretical nor a remote possibility.

Jesse, by your name I am guessing your sex as male. Please take a look at the following chart

A description for the chart can be found in the following blog post But what is the X-Chromosome and how is it different? at http://genealem-geneticgenealogy.blo...mily-tree.html

          Then compare it to

You can see that by tracing mtDNA, you will be tracking only some of the contributors (your maternal line) to your X chromosome.

P.S. Got Attachments Pending Approval, so until they are approved you unfortunately would not see anything. You may read the blog post anyway.

It depends on your expectations from the test. As for me it was only an item of interest and an expensive one too. It gave me deep anthropologic information (which I don't give a flip about)...interesting but not helpful in a paper trail genealogy aspect.

I have a deep paper trail and other testing has helped confirm that trail..the surname tests and somewhat the Family Finder test.

The mtDNA test plus the VERY expensive report, if you go for it, have helped zilch. The report was very, very expensive for what you get. If you are mainly interested in extending your family tree I would not bother with the mtDNA test.

              Reports...

In the case of people doing genetic genealogy research themselves, I agree with Tenn4ever that the report is expensive and brings nothing knew.

Why nothing new? Well..., you have the same data as the report writer, there is nothing more she can extract.

On the other hand, if you are in and out of genetic testing, then a report might be for you since you would have all the basic information laid out for you.

After weighing all the options, I decided to have mtDNA Plus test today. Afterall, I am only (as of today) interested of my mother's deep maternal ancestry.
