    Hi, I got my FMS results some time ago. At FTDNA I have just one match at GD of 3 and the person has taken only the mtDNA Plus test. But recently I was searching other databases and at GenBank I found one person who has exactly the same mutations in HVR1, HVR2 and CR as I have. The only difference is that I have one extra mutation in HVR1. How close is our relation in this case?

    If you name the extra mutation, that may indicate whether it is significant or not. There are some which basically don't count.

      The extra mutation that I have is T16209C. Everything else is the same.

          Only exact matches are shown for the HVR1 and HVR2 tests, so you 3-step match must have also tested the FMS.

          It is difficult to predict how closely related you are to a 1-step match. 16209 is a somewhat uncommon mutation so I consider it to be a significant difference (unlike some of the very common mutations which are generally ignored). But you still need to provide more information to estimate the number of generation to a common ancestor. You should look at the estimated age of your subclade and whether you have recent mutations that might help refine the estimate. If there is an active haplogroup project for your results, you can ask the volunteer project administrator to analyze the results. The table provided in the FAQ is not very reliable.

            I am T2f2. According to Eupedia T2f is 17 000 years old. I haven't found an estimate for T2f2 specifically. The mtDNA Haplogroup T Phylogeny based on Full Mitochondrial Sequences paper doesn't mention anything about T16209C.
