  • English surnames

    Just wanted to let you who have English surnames in your projects, to be on the watch out for English / European surnames who are in Y Haplo H.
    They are very often very common English surnames.

    Some examples, but no where near a complete list;
    Lock(e), Smith, Carter, Campbell, Boswell, Penfold, Lee, Dixon and tons of others.
    They are the Romany people of England / UK.

    So if any of you Admins. happen to get a project member with a European surname in Y Haplo H, you are likely looking at a Romany descendant.
    If anyone has Y Haplo H project members already in your project, could you please let me know.

    Thanks
    Don

    I'm surprised to see Campbell figuring in that list. What evidence do you have of Campbell as a Romany name?

    Among the Scottish tinker or "travelling people" population, common surnames I have heard of include Stewart, McPhee, Townsley, Robertson and Williamson.

      Hi Harry
      I got the Campbell name directly from the Romany researchers.

      Here is a list of Romany surnames that I have extracted from the web sites, and from the records. It isn't a complete list by any means. And I won't vouch that they are truly Romany, only that others have claimed they were Romany. Or the records stated they were travelers.

        Haplogroup H

        I referred our single "H" to Don already. I don't think that a single H sample out of 255 samples in our surname project is any kind of affinity or trend.
