Sometimes they calculate 2 minus 1 rather than 2 alone.

      389ii STR value difference

Yes, the Genographic's Project (GP) gives the STR value at one locus (DYS 389ii) in a way that is different than FTDNA.

      An example:

      FTDNA's 389ii STR value = GP's 389i + 389ii
      Plugging in my STR values 30 = 13 + 17

So FTDNA says my STR value for 389ii is "30", but GP said it was "17." But don't worry, they are equialent. The FTDNA value for DYS 389ii appears to be the standard (more common) way.

        Same issue

I noticed the same problem in my case. For DYS# 389-2 FTDNA has the value 29, while the Genographic Project gives 16. I would not be concerned, but my haplogroup "changed" from R1b (determined using the SNP refinement) to J (12f2.1 genetic marker). So which is which? I e-mailed to the GP but received no response yet.

        Cheers,
