Other males in my paternal line held a belief they came from Germanic/Scandinavian/Aryan stock. Some don't want me to mention my results as it goes against the grain. Also monotheistic Christians don't like it either, it's the devils work.

Not sure if I should laugh or cry... But for the record, I'm a monotheistic Christian who believes in the scientific method and who has obviously done a lot of DNA testing.

As for the original post, Family Finder is your best option unless you have reason to believe that either his direct maternal or paternal line is Native American. As for GENO 2.0, there's no guarantee at this point that the results will be included in the Family Finder data base.

I guess one has to be of a certain age ... my mother, who knew she was part Indian, but adopted, often remarked of "an Indian in the woodshed." I expect she may have been surprised to learn that, at least one of the Indians in the woodshed was her mother.

We had my husbands DNA tested in the Genographic project - not realizing how deep -deep that the project is. Now we are thinking of doing more testing. What my husband is interested in is finding if he has any American Indian in his line, to see if he can solve a family story - His grandma said that there was, coming from a "woodshed" encounter and his mother said that Grandma lies. ( Both of which are not here for testing) At this time he is not interested in what he calls "endless genealogies"

So can we decline to have to have his information made available to a genetic match at the transfer and continue with what he is looking for.

Can we later join in if we want.

What is the best test to determine ethnic background. It should be within the 5 generation time frame, Grandma's family came to America around WWI.

Have you considered Geno 2.0 that extensively samples Y and Mt SNP's and quite a few ancestry-informative autosomal SNP's? The Geno 2.0 data can be imported to FTDNA. The other option is to do FTDNA's Family Finder or both and consolidate all results in your husband's FTDNA account.

Both 23&Me Relative Finder and FTDNA's Family Finder claim reliability only to the fifth generation level, beyond that inherited segments have been reduced by recombination ... although they can still be informative about an admixture event in the more distant past.

mtdna is passed down from mothers to both sons and daughters, but only daughters pass it on to the next generation. Sons offspring receive their mtdna from their mothers.

Therefore his mtdna would have been from his mother, who got it from her mother, who got it from her mother and so on.

Only way his mtdna would suggest American Indian ancestry would be if his maternal line descends from a native woman.

So if understand post correctly, hints with woodshed incident with male American Indian, then no his mtdna will not.

Yes, but there's a trick.

When you are first transferring your results and samples from Genographic to Family Tree DNA, FTDNA demands your permission to disclose your email address to your matches. Go ahead and agree to this; but as soon as the transfer is complete, log into your new FTDNA account and turn off matching (if that's really what you want). Go to "My Account" and then "Match and E-Mail Settings".

Later, you can turn on matching if you wish.

Endless genealogy? I don't think it's endless. In fact the opposite. Modern DNA science is literally re-writing human history. A lot of people can't handle that as they believe in ideologies which is in itself cultural rather than scientific.

If you use FTDNA for your research the information is only made public if you allow your details to be used in 'group' results.

If you have a minimal interest in genealogy I'd recommend 23andMe. You can keep pretty much everything private if you want and genealogy isn't the primary focus but there is some possibility of exchanges in the future if you change your mind.

Native American would show up over there as Asian but you can also export your raw file and upload it to gedmatch.com where they have several different admixture tests. I believe two of the newer admixture tests on gedmatch specifically flag possible native american ancestry.
