  • Kit Number Problems

I see many references to one's "kit number". Is this the same as one's ID number? Whenever I see lists of the "kit numbers" for other participants in forums, they are all look completely different from mine, or my ID number, which seems to be the only number I have been given. Mine is a string of 10 caps and numbers which I received with my Family Tree DNA test kit (along with a bar code). If I try to register for a project, and am asked for my kit number, I enter this ID number, but it is always rejected. Help!

    kit number

    Hello,

The kit number is also the same number that you sign on to FTDNA with.
It is the only way to sign on to your personal FTDNA homepage.
Most of the time they are 5 or 6 numbers and or letters. I have never seen them as a 10 digit number so far.

      kit number

Maybe you are confusing the kit number and your passcode.

One set of numbers is your ID/kit number and the other is your passcode to login with. Are you possibly using those as one continuous number?

        Kit number problems

Yikes! Connie why is this so confusing? I sign on to my FT-DNA page using a username and password (passcode) that I selected myself during the registration process. That seems to work fine. The "ID number" of 10 numbers and capital letters was received with my kit (on a sticker) and it was required to track the progress of my DNA analysis and to download my results. I have never used it to sign on to my FTDNA page. I think part of the problem is that there are too many entities involved and I am not certain who is doing what just yet. There is National Geographic, through which I signed on to the Genographic Project, then there is the Genographic Project itself, and finally there is FTDNA. When I received my results, I signed a waiver that was supposed to release my results to be publicly posted somewhere, and to be notified if my data matched anyone else's. I haven't gotten any feedback about any of this so far after 2 weeks, and since it took me nearly 6 months to get my DNA results (instead of the promised 4-6 weeks) I keep thinking I must be doing something wrong. Anyway, thanks; I surely can figure all this out eventually.

          Hi Tony,

It sounds like you initially ordered your test through the Genographic Project (National Geographic is the organization that runs the GP).

Your Genographic Project ID should start with FW, and can only be used to log in to your Genographic Project account at http://www.genographic.org

If you transferred your Genographic results to Family Tree DNA, then you were given a kit number starting with "N" and a password. You should have received an email with this information immediately after completing the transfer. Use this kit # and password to log in to your personal myFTDNA account at http://www.familytreedna.com/login.aspx

The only time that you would have chosen your own username is when you registered for an account on this forum. The forum account is separate from everything else.

THanks Elise. I never received anything back by email or any other means after I transferred my results to ftdna. Sorry to say I have really just lost interest in this whole endeavor since there is so little interest shown in customers after their money has been sent in. Really, I waited 5 months for my results, and every inquiry I made to either National Geographic or ftdna was "don't bother us". I'm going back to "old fashioned" research!

As a project admin I can tell you that many times the customer doesn't hear back from FTDNA because they provided the wrong e-mail address. I have had two such cases this month.

Have you tried calling FTDNA's office? Although at times I've been told that I'd have to wait a little longer for results, I've never had anything but the best of customer service from the folks answering the phones.
