I know that there are 186 graves of schoolchildren who died at Carlisle.

And I found out that at Carlisle even if a child wanted to talk to someone who spoke their language they couldn't because they were separated into different classes. Before that the school staff would put soap in their mouths for talking their own language.

American Indian Admixture
Originally posted by rainbowYes, I know that. Canada also had schools for Indian children to be assimilated.

Originally posted by YaffaI am not confirming this is true but I heard some children committed suicide They were homesick and could not deal with the culture shock. I know that some ran away and went back to their tribes.
This link says 190 died, that is why a cemetery was needed at the school.
Here is a photo the historic site marker that says 186 graves.
Can you believe it is advertised in tourism!?! The resting place of 186 re-interred American Indian children who died while attending the Carlisle School. What happened to the other 4 kids?
Were there actually more than the 190 that we know of?

Full Bloods died of white man's diseases
Most of the Native Americans in the Bellingham, WA area are "mixed bloods", even though some may apear to be "full bloods." At least that is what I read somewhere. The simple reason is that pure-blooded Native Americans were mostly killed off by epidemics.
On the other hand, there has been a relatively recent influx of Native Americans into this area from the interior, and who may be "full bloods."
That is my understanding. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

[QUOTE=Yaffa]I know many died of sickness MAYBE some suicide.
...QUOTE]
Outbreaks of infectious disease were a chronic problem at all schools right-up to the day they were closed, although the problem was alleviated by the reforms of the 1920's.
This was the same sort of problem armies faced before the modern era. Most of the casualties of the Civil War succumbed to disease rather than battlefield wounds.
