      I didn't know that.
I know that there are 186 graves of schoolchildren who died at Carlisle.

Yes, I know that. Canada also had schools for Indian children to be assimilated.
And I found out that at Carlisle even if a child wanted to talk to someone who spoke their language they couldn't because they were separated into different classes. Before that the school staff would put soap in their mouths for talking their own language.

Yes the soap story is true. This happened to my friend's grandparents and when they left the school they stayed up north in NY and did not go back to their tribe.

I am not confirming this is true but I heard some children committed suicide They were homesick and could not deal with the culture shock. I know that some ran away and went back to their tribes.

This link says 190 died, that is why a cemetery was needed at the school.

Here is a photo the historic site marker that says 186 graves.

Can you believe it is advertised in tourism!?! The resting place of 186 re-interred American Indian children who died while attending the Carlisle School. What happened to the other 4 kids?
Were there actually more than the 190 that we know of?

The marker says over 10,000 children went to Carlisle.
Carlisle was just one of many schools throughout the USA & Canada to assimilate American Indian children into white Protestant society.

On the west coast is where my maternal line came from. Those were the Catholic missions run by the Spainards. Still can find any record on my family and the Spainards kept much better records that the US. Especially listing people of color. Mezito/Mezita was you were Indian/European mixed. Mulatto/Mulatta was you were mixed with Afro. Some indians were so dark they listed them as Mulatto even though they were not Afro, but at least they list them of color. Here in the US they used the term Mulatto for anyone that didn't look white or looked mixed.

                    • Full Bloods died of white man's diseases

Most of the Native Americans in the Bellingham, WA area are "mixed bloods", even though some may apear to be "full bloods." At least that is what I read somewhere. The simple reason is that pure-blooded Native Americans were mostly killed off by epidemics.

On the other hand, there has been a relatively recent influx of Native Americans into this area from the interior, and who may be "full bloods."

That is my understanding. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Outbreaks of infectious disease were a chronic problem at all schools right-up to the day they were closed, although the problem was alleviated by the reforms of the 1920's.

This was the same sort of problem armies faced before the modern era. Most of the casualties of the Civil War succumbed to disease rather than battlefield wounds.

My 3rd ggrandfather was taken a prisoner of war during the Civil War. He was transfered to Point Lookout Prison, MD where he died of disease. He is buried at the prison cemetery.

Well I am one person who is very proud to be mixed blood! Even though it is only 10%. (Well it could be as high as 18%, but less likely)

All us mixed bloods should be proud no matter what %. Never have to argue over which might be superior over the other. We get to claim many cultures and I think thats special!
