  • Error between FTDNA and Genographic results

As a technical type, I often cross-reference results to back up my data. I purchased a Genographic kit about the same time I purchased my FTDNA Kit. The results were identical EXCEPT for marker 389-2.

The GP results shows an Allele of 16.
The FTDNA results show an ALLELE of 25.

One or both of the results have to be in error. Anyone have an explanation?

There is no error, just a difference in reporting nomenclature.

FTDNA reports 389-2 as inclusive of the value of 389-1. The Genographic project does not.

Your value for 389-1 must be 9, right?

Hmm, why did you purchase two kits? FTDNA does the testing for the Genographic Project, using the same lab, so they have a system for transferring results between FTDNA and GP.

GP participants can transfer their results to FTDNA for free. FTDNA customers can transfer their results to GP for a $15 fee (it's actually a donation to the GP).

It's too late to fix this for yourself, but thought I'd point this out in case you have other family members who are considering testing as well.

        Error between GP and FTDNA

I purchased the GP kit as a matter of interest a few weeks before I purchased the FTDNA kit. I wasn't aware until later that FTDNA lab did both kits. Either way it makes for an opportunity to check reliability of testing.

          FTDNA vs Genographic results

Had enountered the same problem and sent an email to Catherine [email protected] she explained the difference in results methods of reporting. She will upon request give you a detailed analysis. Have a great day.
