  • Transferred from Genographic today - what now?

    Hi,
Today the transfer feature from Genographic to FTDNA finally started working, so I transferred my results here.

Now I'm wondering what I should do to get more insights, what test should I purchase here at FTDNA in order to get more information than I already have from Genographic?

I guess the Family Finder is a good start, but what about the different Y-tests? Do I need to take one of those, or will that only tell me what I already know from Genographic?

As you can tell I'm quite a noob, so any help much appreciated

Are your results from the new Geno 2.0 Next Gen, or the older Geno 2.0?

They are from the Geno 2.0 Next Gen.

What is the typical wait time to get results from Family Tree (Family Finder test) after transferring over Genographic results?

What is your terminal SNP at Geno 2.0 NextGen? Do you get the same result at FTDNA after the transfer from NextGen?

My maternal haplogroup is the same as Genographic (U5A1b), the paternal haplogroup seems to not have been analyzed yet, I see this text on the page for Y-dna haplotree: "Your predicted haplogroup is under review.".

Is the haplogroup the same as my "terminal SNP"?

The terminal SNP is the SNP within a haplogroup that is the most chronologically recent within the known SNPs that were tested. Geno 2.0 and FTDNA just call it a haplogroup, so your terminal SNP will show up as a haplogroup at the Geno 2.0 site and at FTDNA. There have been problems with the results from Geno 2.0 NextGen so don't be surprised if you see a discrepancy.

You could order a 37, 67 or 111 marker STR test so that once you get your Geno 2.0 results you could join a haplogroup and/or regional project and have your name and your markers show up in the list and that way you can also see if you have any matches in the FTDNA database.

Alright, thanks a lot for the answer!

On my Y-DNA haplotree page (where I see the message that my haplogroup is still under review) I do see a bunch of SNP:s marked with green color, among those I see the one that Genographic said was my haplogroup (L257+). So I guess that some sort of work is in progress, and that's what I'm wondering - will buying a marker STR-test give me any additional information? Or do I get the equivalent of one of those tests through the Genographic test I've transferred?

Maybe this is a question for FTDNA-support but any help very appreciated

Your L257 result is what I was asking for earlier. L257 is downstream from U106. http://www.yfull.com/tree/R-L257/ You should join the U106 project at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups...out/background

You do not get any STRs from the Genographic test. If you want to be seen in the list at https://www.familytreedna.com/public...frame=yresults after joining that project you will need to get an STR test. You will possibly have matches from the STR test.

Ok, now I think I get it. Awesome, thanks again for your help!
