Does anyone know how to upload Geno 2.0 results to Gedmatch?

  • #2
Unfortunately Geno 2.0 contains far fewer autosomal SNP's when compared to Family Finder or 23 and Me/Ancestry tests so it cannot be uploaded to Gedmatch as there would not be enough data for matching.

      Confused As Always

I also am trying to download my Geno 2.0 files to Gedmatch. I have an account with FTDNA and have transferred my Geno 2.0 Raw Data files to FTDNA with no problem. About 5 weeks ago I downloaded my FTDNA files to Gedmatch and shortly thereafter Gedmatch posted a notice which basically said FTDNA had apparently changed their software and it could not be downloaded at that time. Apparently that has been straightened out. I contacted FTDNA's Help Desk regarding this because I thought that perhaps my data had been compiled BEFORE the software change and asked if this was the case. FTDNA's reply was...

      "Hello,
Thank you for your e-mail. We are aware of this issue between the Family Finder raw data and compatibility with Gedmatch. We hope to have this issue resolved shortly, at which time you should be able to re-download your file and upload to Gedmatch as usual. In the meantime, you can still use Gedmatchs program by resorting your raw data by chromosome-position. We appreciate your feedback and attention to the issue."

This didn't really answer my question as to whether my files had been created prior to FTDNA's software change or not so I contacted their Help Desk again. Here is that reply...

"You will probably need to redownload your Family Finder raw data files and then upload them again to Gedmatch."

I wasn't really sure about what I should really do so I contacted Gedmatch's Help. The following are my emails to Gedmatch and their replies...

      Good morning.
I downloaded my FTDNA/Geno 2.0 Raw Data files on 12-12-13. A few days later a notice was posted on your site that said there was a problem tokenizing all files downloaded on 12-11-13 or later. Now there seems to be a problem with FTDNA's files because they have a bug in their new software. I do not know if I have FTDNA's new or old style files so I don't know if I need to convert my files and download them again on gedmatch.
Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

      "Sean,

Your kit F279338 did not upload properly. Please delete it and upload again using a fresh copy of your download from FTDNA. You can check the success of your upload using the DNA File Diagnostic Utility on your GEDmatch home page."

Thanks for your quick reply. Before I waste anymore of your time or Gedmatch's time, can I download my Geno 2.0 files that I downloaded to FTDNA to Gedmatch? If so, which FTDNA download link would I click on?
      Thanks, Sean

      "Sean,

Geno 2 files can not be directly uploaded to GEDmatch. If you have purchased the FTDNA conversion then they can be uploaded to gedmatch using the instructions for FTDNA uploads found on your GEDmatch home page"

I'm not quite sure what the "FTDNA Conversion" is but I have had several Y-DNA tests and a SNP performed by FTDNA and have downloaded my Geno 2.0 files to FTDNA. I know I'm not the brightest person on the block but this just confuses the hell out of me.
Has anyone actually downloaded their Geno 2.0 files from FTDNA to Gedmatch? According to FTDNA and Gedmatch it can be done...I guess
      Thanks, Hoppy

The "conversion" would actually entail purchasing the Family Finder test, almost as if you were a new customer. But since you transferred your Geno 2.0 results to FTDNA, they already have your sample on file. That means you won't have to send in a new sample for the Family Finder test.

          Hi Ann,
If I understand you correctly I need to purchase FTDNA's Family Finder if I want to be able to upload anything to Gedmatch? I have tested with FTDNA so they do have my samples for Family Finder. I should have spent my money on Family Finder instead of Geno 2.0. The only info I got from Geno 2.0 that I didn't know from my FTDNA testing was that my mtdna is T2b. Live and learn.
          Thanks again Ann.

            Try Dodecad

            Go here:

Download this (if you are on Windows). Download your Geno 2.0 results and extract the compressed file. This tool needs the autosomal result file extracted from your Geno 2.0 archive.

            It worked for me anyhow.
