  • Y-haplogroup I Question

Is there anyone out there that can tell me why the description of Hap. I on the National Geno page Ref. mainly the Balkins. When looking at my FTDNA page the Hap. I says common within the Viking populations. Somewhat confused on this. Also do you know if FTDNA perform subclade test for Haplogroup I.

    Thanks,

    Haplogroup I SNP test

My understanding is that they currently test for subclades I1a and I1b. I believe that I fall into the I1c subclade but their SNP test only placed me into I P19+... I heard rumor of them developing a super-I subclade test, but don't believe that they are using it yet. As for the Balkin's and Vikings references, it is believed that they migrated from the Balkins to Scandinavia where the Viking's originated.

I also tested P19+. I do not believe FTDNA currently tests for the I1a or I1b subclades. Based on Athey's haplogroup predictor I am almost certainly I1a.

Look in the library of FTDNA. There is a paper there about haplogroup I that shows the Balkins.

EthnoAncestry does detailed tests of the various haplogroups

EthnoAncestry does detailed tests of the various haplogroups, R1a, Rib, I ...

            Link: http://www.ethnoancestry.com/catalog.html

Here's their info for Haplogroup I.

            Product 3
Product Name: Y - HAPLOGROUP I SUBGROUP SNP TEST

            PURPOSE

To assign individuals to one or more of six Haplogroup I categories: I*-M170; I1a-M253; I1a4-M227; I1b-P37; I1b2-M26; and I2-M223 (the latter was formerly known as I1c). In other words we will assign individuals to the a, b, or c categories of the Haplogroup I.

This product will be of interest to those who have been tested for short tandem repeats (STRs), at least 10 markers (please include these Y-DNA results on the order page), and the pattern appears to suggest an "I" haplogroup, but specifics are lacking.

To view a Chromatogram and Sequence for I*-M170 as seen by our geneticist click here: http://www.ethnoancestry.com/chromaM170.html

The price for Product 3 is $150. The price covers the amplification of the DNA sample and storage (for a minimum of 20 years unless the customer requests that we destroy the sample), as well as the primers used to detect the above 6 markers, and associated costs (e.g., the test kit plus mailing). Please click here to find out about what we provide: http://www.ethnoancestry.com/haplo.html

The above represent the most common "I clades". If perchance the results of the above testing indicate that further testing is warranted, we can add tests for the following markers found within the I phylogenetic tree: M284, P30, P40, P38, M161, M21, M72, and P19. Anyone who is interested in being tested for these SNPs subsequent to receiving their results for the above testing, please use the "Contact Us" button above and we will discuss your needs.
