  • Genetic Distance

Hi all. I have a question about understanding genetic distance. If I match someone 11/12, but there are six steps difference on the one marker that is a mismatch, (in this case DYS385b, a fast moving marker). am I genetically closer to him or to another person with whom there's only a four-step difference, but on a total of three different markers? If the six step difference on only one marker is more distant, can someone explain the logic/science of this analysis beyond the obvious? Should the nature of the marker be taken into account when determining genetic distance? I understand that a 12 marker sequence is low resolution, but at this point I'm just trying to determine ancient relationships. Thanks,

    Vinnie
