Genographic DNA test

Hi again everyone,

Ive just sent off my DNA test kit to the Genographic project.. Im looking forward to getting some insight to my beginnings...ive also contacted my dad and discussed his adoption, he told me he will ask to see his adoption file from Scotland so hopefully i should have some good information to work on to start tracing my family tree once again .....so watch this space as they say im sure ill need some info from you about my DNA results when they come thru ..you all seem to know so much and actually understand it all im getting there with the basics ..thanks again to all that gave me advice before x

Hi - I was just wondering, if you don't mind saying, how much did the test cost? I've heard its rather expensive. I want to get one done!

The Genographic test costs $107.50, including shipping:

But keep in mind that the Genographic test is not comprehensive--it is more like a starter package. For Y chromosomes (men only), it only yields 12 markers and a haplogroup classification. For mitochondrial DNA (women, or men in lieu of Y chromosome test), it only yields the mutations in the HVR1 region plus a haplogroup classification.

But once your Genographic results arrive, you can transfer them into a Family Tree DNA account at no extra charge. You can then compare yourself against other FTDNA customers, order more tests, join DNA projects of interest to you, and upload your results into the public Ysearch database if you wish.

Alternatively, if you know that you will want more comprehensive or multiple tests, you can order everything at once from FTDNA directly. This will get you your total results sooner. If you do this, though, be sure to order through a project (for a surname, a geographical region, etc.) in order to get the price discount.

it was $127 which is roughly equivalent to £68.00 then i had to pay £20costs when it was delivered due to cutom charges..i did it as im interested in the migration of my family..if thats possible..if id known there were better tests from this site i would have done this first..im green when it comes to this sort of thing im hoping to learn as i go along ..hope you have luck in finding your ancesters..im not expecting much as my dad was adopted he told me he will get his adoption file but so far hasnt done anything about it..GRR

I just now noticed that both you and charli are from England, hence the higher shipping cost. When you order from Family Tree DNA directly, I think they bill the test kit separately as a $2 item (hence almost no custom charges), and then the DNA analysis separately as a service.

But nevertheless, the Genographic service is just fine. Remember, when your results arrive, you can transfer them to a (free of charge) Family Tree DNA account. From that account you can then compare your results against Family Tree's very large customer database, order more tests, join projects of interest to you, etc.

Like one other poster mentioned, have your information transferred over to Family Tree DNA once you've browsed through the National Genographic site and copied all your information. There's no charge, plus you can order more advanced tests. The selection of test panels is continously growing. Right now Family Tree offers the highest resolution y-chromosome DNA test at 67 markers. You can opt for 25, 37, and Deep SNP subclade tests (and recently more advanced tests such as autosomal testing).

Once you transfer your information to Family Tree DNA, ensure to register on YSearch.org It's the world's largest genetic database.
