I would like to know if I am onestep away on a 25/25 match and another is two steps away, how many generations would that make me from these two people. They are known 4th cousins, we all have like surnames. I know that it is 4-24 generations apart, but if they are just one step apart and I am one step from one of them, would that mean that I am 4 generations away or what. I can't understand all this. autherray

If you truly are 4th cousins then that means that your common ancestor is a 3rd great grandparent. That's five generations back.

I don't know too much about all of this other stuff but if you know that you are cousins does it make a difference? Maybe y'all just mutated at a rate faster than what science currently thinks is possible.

I believe you are saying the other two are known 4th cousins, but you do not have a paper trail connecting you to them?
It would help if you listed the three of you as A, B, C, listed the markers and alleles values that have miss matches and clarify the paper trail issue.
