I follow the Russian practice and keep my vodka in the refrigerator. It's good cold.

I usually drink Stolichnaya but like Pertsovka (Ukrainian pepper vodka) when I can get it.

I'm going to get a bottle of Stoli and put some hot red peppers in it. I'll let them soak for a month or so and then try it.

I have just gotten my results back. Haplogroup H, positions:
16311C, 16519C.

My family, at least from my mother's side, have lived in Finland from the year 1770.

Where do I go from here?

Can anyone offer me more help about the above positions.

I have a 16311C,and 16519C,too ,though I'm a haplo mtK,but apparently I have some sequences matching H.All my K matches have these #'s,but you don't catch it from the area you live in,these genes are 10,000 yrs.old and mtH and K marry and intermarry and migrate,so it isn't surprising. H and 311C,esp.519C are found in the Mediterranean like in Portugal and Spain.One woman on Oxford Ancestors former forum said her doctor told her she had Spanish eyes,medical people claim to be able to see differences in the deep eye,so any way she said she hadn't known anything about that,because she's from Ireland and haplo mtK.From what I know about K,they can be all K,or K and Jewishgenes,or K and Mediterranean(and near east)Genes.So these people could contain some Portuguese ancestry519C,mixed in with the Alpine.I wanted to ask a FamilyTree Geneticist how and when some K's got that ancestry.They can usually tell WHEN other genes were added-that's how they place a date on genes.

I'm a baby and a freak like people call me.I had a hard time downing Vodka-too strong for me I was afraid I'd wake up in the morgue on a table-maybe it was a bad bottle.I did sip some of my GrandDads Gin-liked it.I like champagne 'cause it's sweet- I tasted it for the first time at a part-time job 10 yrs. ago at an office birthday party.I tasted Peach Brandy Schnapps,tastes classy,warm,and good.But I'm not a major drinker.I like orange juice,lemonade,milk,rice milk,you know,sweet easy,not speakeasy. Beer,beer makes me puke,one sip and my head starts to swimmin',feel sick all over like I got meningitis or something-I tried it,but I couldn't drink it-sorry guys,there'll be more for you!!!!! (I had 1-2 oz.of gin-at a sitting,1glass of champagne,and too much schnapps-but not while driving,I for one, ain't crazy!-nor have I ever been very drunk-except for the champagne-but I took the train home from work).

Pekka and Toivo

Once when the Russians bombed Helsinki during WWII, Pekka and Toivo was in town getting drunk, they had been drinking for four weeks. After the party was over in a hotelroom and Pekka rolled up the curtains and he sow the whole city in ruins. When Pekka had looked at this for a while he said to Toivo

My dad is from the Tampere area of Finland. He moved to Canada in 1950 after spending 5 years in Sweden. He served in WWII and learned 4-5 languages from his "travels." He doesn't drink, but he like to tell the following joke:

A Finn and a Swede went into an all-night bar. They spent one day, two days and three days imbibing the alcohol. At 4:00am on the third day the Swede said to the Finn, "Don't you think we've had enough now?"

The Finn scowled at the Swede and said "Did we come here to talk or to drink?"

Finns and vodka, (viina)

Hello forum members:

The younger generation has changed. Whereas my father and his friends used to enjoy the strong drinks of alcohol, we are the wine generation.

On weekends, one can observe the middle-age and younger people shopping for wine in the Finnish Alko stores. It can be easily an hour long investigative shopping, since Finland is importing one of the finest selections from all over the world.
On Saturdays, one may invite some friends over to taste the new discovery while sharing some good cheeses, bread, and crackers to go along with.

In conclusion, we are not living in isolation anymore. Intermarriages between the other members of europeans are taking place more and more.
We all are required to speak more than one language. (I speak fluently three european languages, my brother masters five of them!)

Being a member of the European Union has helped (forced) to take the Finns out of voluntary (wanted) isolation.

As an example of Finnish mentality I can tell you the following:
English speakers say, "the guest is coming", whereas in finnish the translation is, "the stranger is coming."

Nevertheless, we love people too. Even thou I isolate myself inside the lovely finnish archipelago every summer, I still want to see people at least once a week on regular basis.

As I recall, it's pretty good. It didn't give me a headache, and that's a sign of a quality vodka.

Pertsovka is really good when one has a cold. It will clear your sinuses real quick!

I don't like Absolut Peppar; it tastes like what the Russians would call kakashka.

Disclaimer: I only drink occasionally, and I never drive while drinking: it causes too much spillage!

Finns drink more Koskenkorva than Finlandia vodka, but I prefer Finlandia vodka, it is softer and smoother than koskenkorva, that has a rougher taste. And finns don't use the word vodka, they call it "viina". And they say "kippis", not "nazdarove" But both finns and russians drink heavily when they do.

Have you uploaded your DNA data into Mitosearch, and searched for matches? There should be a way (an icon?) to do this from your FTDNA Web page.

I must point out that you might get additional information from testing a man in your family--your brother, father, mother's father, etc. The Y chromosome (found only in men) can typically make a more precise match than the mitochondrial DNA that you have tested for yourself.
