    Hi Betts from Norway.

Beautiful country you have; I've been from the North Cape to Oslo.

Not sure I understand your question completely, but what you normally have to pay for are any DNA tests you take. If you test with FTDNA you will be given a personal web page and another one or two if you upload your results to Ysearch or MitoSearch. No additional charge for those. No special genealogy program is required.

    Hope this helps.

      Fra en annen normann

      Hi Betts,
From a fellow Norwegian some advice!
This is a seriously addictive hobby! I started with the 12 marker Genographic Program test (which I got as a gift). Now I have taken the 37 marker Y-DNA test, HVR1 mtDNA test, just ordered the SNP test to verify my Haplogroup N sub-clade status, etc, etc.
I have been exploring "conventional genealogy" for many years, and have in fact traced both my direct paternal and maternal ancestors back 7-8 generations.

I enjoy both hobbies tremendously, but there is really not much commonality between them. Most of the DNA history is really in pre-history, 40 or more generations back. The exception is of course if you want to verify some possible link between two or more family groups that may, or may not, be related. In Norway, with the surnames being patronymic until quite recently, this is a difficult task.

If you want more information I suggest you read some of the books recommended under the Library tab on the FTDNA Home page.

Contact me if you would like more info.
      Good hunting.
      Med vennlig hilsen
