I have seen 23andme versus FTDNA threads before.
I have tested with both companies and see pros and cons for each.
I think that in terms of most information for the dollar spent than 23andme is the winner. I think however if your goal is more specific ( I.e. Did I desend from a particular man.) than FTDNA gets my vote.
So in short , what site is best is determined by your goals in DNA testing.

I've got 63 matches there and so far I'm sharing genomes with 18 of them. I've even met one of my 4th cousins via Skype; we appear to have a common ancestress from the late 18th century.

I tested there nine months ago and had 993 matches and until 6 weeks ago I still had 993 matches. Since then I have lost 4 matches giving me a total of 989. I did find some matches who I share a common ancestor with but I'm not that happy with the company most matches are not interested in Genealogy.

I've tested with 23andme too (5 ppl). Partly b/c I wanted the results for one particular marker. It's a mixed bag over there. Most health results are interesting but not particularly helpful since for some, each marker only explains 3% of variation.

And the RF results are ehhh too. Yes, I found my dad's 2nd cousin + her daughter, and I found my dad's 7th cousin, but most every other close connection is anonymous & won't respond to my emails. Even one of the 23andme workers is my grandmother's predicted 3rd cousins & she hasn't answered a single email either. And my grandfather has a predicted 2nd cousin! who won't respond to emails

Anyway, for me it was worth it b/c I got the info for that one SNP & I was able to transfer them over the FTDNA (where I found my grandmother's 3rd cousin).

On 23andMe go to "Ancestry Labs"->"Ancestry Finder" and scroll to the bottom of the page. You can download a CSV file that contains a lot of useful information including countries of origin for grandparents, names and where you match chromosome wise for public matches plus the same information for many of your private matches. This assumes of course thatpeople have provided that information but in a surprisingly largenumber of cases they have.

23andMe has a lot of good information. It's just a PITA to find it. If you're an adoptee or child of an adoptee and haven't tested there you are missing out on a lot of information which is why I recommend testing both there and here.

23andme had a sale so I decided I would test with them, partly to see if they came up with the same y-dna and mt-dna results as FTDNA and also to see if I matched with anyone in their Relative Finder because it had been available longer than FF.

The y and mt dna haplogroups matched FTDNA exactly.
I had hundreds of matches in Relative Finder.
I did and do look at the health stuff but I wouldn't rely upon it. If they say you have a lower cancer risk then that is only based on what they tested. I knew I had arisk but they did not test that gene so they tell me I hav e lower than average risk.

My biggest problem with them is the restrictiins in Relative Finder. Apart from people whose results are public matches (if you want to be a public match you can) there is a limit of 5 invitations a day. I have only contacted (or tried to contact) about 100 people and I nopw have 1000 matches. It's a joke and I dod read the rule was so that people would not get lots of invitations all at once. Of the invitations I have sent out ovder the last 15 months mopst have not bothered to reply. Until an invitation is accepted you can see virtually nothing of the person's information. And the results (as in FTDNA's chromosome browser) are just the one (sometime more)
two longest sections whereas with FTDNA you get it all.
THEN with 23andme you have to pay a monthly subscription (minimum 12 months) which pushes the cost up nearer to FTDNA.
In my opinion, for genealogy I would not recomend 23andme.

I am an adoptee looking for my paternal side. I originally used FTDNA, but was pursuaded to also go with 23andMe for its expanded database. Frankly, it has been no help at all in my search.

1_mke is correct, I was able to determine my biological mother's haplogroup, which I did not previously have. That is not much of a benefit when you consider the cost.

I do have more public matches at 23andMe than I do with FTDNA (193 vs 137). In total I have 880 matches at 23andMe, but almost 700 do not want to identify themselves.

Personally, I prefer FTDNA.

If you're not interested in matching Y or mtDNA to possible relatives it's also good for finding out you mtDNA Haplogroup (women and men) and Y Haplogroup (men only).

I ordered it for my father, and it's not worth it. The only case I would recommend 23andMe is adoptees looking for biological family. They can test at 23andMe, then import the results into FTDNA's database, for the widest possible pool to match against.
