Can someone explain what the various k levels mean in layman's terms?

At k=12, I got the following result:

          Population
          East_European 16.1%
          Paleo_Mediterranean 11.5%
          Iberian 12.7%
          Caucasian 4.2%
          Uralic_Permic 1.9%
          Balto_Finnic 6.4%
          Paleo_Balkanic 1.7%
          Celto_Germanic 40.2%
          Paleo_North_European 1.8%
          South_Central_Asian 1.7%
          Volga_Uralic 1.6%
          Altaic_Turkic 0.2%

            Mother:

            North_Atlantic 38.8%
            North_Asian 0.1%
            East_African 0.2%
            West_Central_Asian 1.9%
            South_Asian 0.5%
            West_African 0.1%
            Caucasus 5.8%
            Finnish 7.2%
            Atlantic_Mediterranean 26.4%
            Southwest_Asian 3.2%
            South_Baltic 15.7%
            East_Asian 0.1%

            Me:

            North_Atlantic 27.4%
            North_Asian 0.1%
            East_African 0.6%
            West_Central_Asian 3.4%
            South_Asian 0.6%
            West_African 0.4%
            Caucasus 12.0%
            Finnish 4.6%
            Atlantic_Mediterranean 28.6%
            Southwest_Asian 9.0%
            South_Baltic 13.2%
            East_Asian -

            My double cousin:

            North_Atlantic 25.1%
            North_Asian 0.1%
            East_African 0.3%
            West_Central_Asian 4.2%
            South_Asian 0.3%
            West_African 0.1%
            Caucasus 13.7%
            Finnish 6.2%
            Atlantic_Mediterranean 29.4%
            Southwest_Asian 7.7%
            South_Baltic 12.7%
            East_Asian 0.1%

I would have expected much more Mediterranean in me and my double cousin than in my mother, because my father and my cousin's mother are Italian.

K just means the number components. Count the number for each and it will make sense.

All the tool does is match your SNPs to other groups of SNP. These groups are components listed and are most likely ancient. The names chosen by the author are just where the component appears the highest now and may or may NOT reflect the origin of the component.

The guy who did it is a well respected Estonian with published generic papers in English and Russian. I'm not going to post his name or email since that probably violates the forum policy, buy I will say he's not shy and his info can be found from the links on your results page,

I understood that part. I was wondering if there was further explanations for the populations (e.g.,Uralic Permic, Paleo Med). I interpreted Stevo's question to be the same as what I was wondering.

See my post above your post.

It's best to be very descriptive concerning your questions since responders have no idea if the poster is a Ph.D scientist in another field or a 12 year old looking at his parents results.
