I agree that I'd like to see a single predominant place for serious posters, project admins, researchers, etc. to congregate.

I caution all to NOT invest time and energy in what only looks like the easiest to use forum, or the forum that has your favorite poster.

My encouragement is that we consider the long term sustainability of a blogging web site. If the support organization is a small, rag-tag bunch, that may be heroic, but we will probably in for another forum death at some point.

I know we have people engaged with strong programming skills in various web sites but that is not enough.

The investment and support commitment from an vibrant, self-sustaining organization must be present, not just the commitment of an individual. Ultimately, we need longevity, 24x7 availability, backup and archival systems, responsiveness, international access, continued functional enhancements, etc. I/T infrastructure races are won by tortoises, not hares.

      I agree with posting 76.
I suppose that it was inevitable that with the presumed demise of dna-forums.org numerous new forums would spring up but that makes it more difficult to decide where to go - or join them all. Until a dominant site emerges the discussions are going to be either non existent or patchy.

Apart from the fact that the members of the forum might use any number of dna labs, though FTDNA might be the dominant one, I think it is a pity that the FTDNA Forum could not be more dominant and perhaps be the "dominant forum" for DNA. To me that would provide the stability and support required to enable continuity without fear of more forum demises.

Well the FTDNA forum can not be the dominate one since no third party DNA company links can be posted. See the terms of use thread.

well, i guess, but the link I used is the link I have had in my bookmarks for 2+ years, that I used all the time to go to it, so my guess is he had both set up to point to the same place

so maybe it is a least a little relevant, or forgivable in a less harsh environment ...................

Correct. He would swap between the two when he was making changes to the site. It could get quite confusing when the (currently) wrong one was cached.

They could always change their policy.
From the terms of use thread it seems the restriction is fairly recent and I think there might be advantages to FTDNA if they removed that restriction and the forum were opened up to take over from the defunct Dna-forums.
A bit of PR if nothing else.

Did anyone ever find out what happened to DNA-Forums?

Nope. Seems the owner walked away from it.

Four more forums where people discuss haplogroups, population genetics, and such are:

                      Forum Biodiversity

                      Anthroscape

                      Rootsweb DNA List

                      Skadi Forum

MolGen seems to be picking up some of the discussions that were on DNA Forums. It used to be mostly in Russian, but added several English topics since DNA Forums went down.

I only mentioned four. Which ones do you consider blatantly racist? As far as I know, they are open for anyone to join. The few racists posts I've seen, I can't remember which site (either Antroscape or Forum Biodiversity), were from a "flame war" or two with all sides and ethnicities involved. However, most threads are civil and peaceful, discussing the same type things you see here being discussed.

I forgot one forum, Eupedia. It also has a lot of good posts, maps, charts, etc.

I miss DNA-Forums ( New info. appeared there fastest), but aside from 23andMe and FTDNA's forums, these are the only forums I could find on the subject of populations genetics.

Anyways, a person could visit these sites and determine for themselves if they are racist.

Thanks Nathan for the MolGen website. It looks like it's off to a good start. Bookmarked.

Have you actually looked at the Skadi Forum? The home page says clearly that it is a "Germanic Online Community."

That doesn't necessarily mean that it's racist. However, there's a notorious case of a poster at 23andMe's forum whose screen name is The German. He posted there incessantly about his fear that his mother's 23andMe results might indicate that she was not "pure" German and that she might have some non-European distant ancestry. He went so far as to threaten suicide in one posting if he found that she definitely had non-German, non-European ancestry.

One poster in one of those threads reported that The German is a regular poster at the Skadi Forum. I never tried to verify that, but it seems believable to me. Also, I noticed the title of one thread on their home page - "Studies of Jewish Genetics and the Racial Double Standard." I think this illustrates much of the character of Skadi Forum.

I'm not going debate which sites are racist and not. It's very obvious after reading the forums terms and glancing at a few posts.

There was also a case where a girl actually did kill herself supposedly because of one of those type of sites but not from your list. I just thought I should caution anyone joining to read the terms and plenty of posts especially from the moderators before joining.

Personally I like some of the posts at Forum Biodiversity, but many are completely stupid or racist. Best to just stick to the genetics and various science sections. Complete free speech is allowed there but they do ban severe (subjective) personal attacks and claim to have a quality over quantity ban which does not get inactive as often as it should.
